1999 S70 GLT - looking for input/advice

Post by Grantkat »

I am going to be undertaking a front strut replacement in the not too distant future. I can spin the nut on the top of the strut. as far as capability, I am able to use a spring compressor and change individual components or use a quick strut, I am on the fence about which way to go. Here are my questions.
Am I better off picking components and reusing the original spring? or is there a solid quick strut that would do that job

I welcome comments and thoughts.

What are your long term plans for the car?

The quick strut kits save a lot of labour but are 30-50k life products at best. Worse, if your roads are crappy

long term. I plan to drive this for the foreseeable future, short of a catastrophic failure. I live in southwestern Ohio - by definition our roads are 3 levels below crappy. I live in a continuous cycle of bad roads, long construction cycles resulting in bad roads....Im all in. so...
your thoughts on component replacement??

Whenever I do suspension work I always start with the rear suspension. You'll be surprised how much better the car handles besides getting a better feel what is really happening up front.

On our 2000 S70 purchased last year, I've installed the rear Blaupart shocks along with FCP purchased springs. The height is back to normal and car feels very planted. Hopefully the fronts will be installed before winter. A member from another forum confirmed Blaupart has been very good on his S70 after someone asked what I thought of them.

The springs was also a recommendation from an owner with several S & V70. He had tried the OE and others but found the 850, V70 unit worked the best and didn't sag with time. The ride and handling has been excellent after several months of use.

In 2012 I'd purchased a 98 S70 T5 with 230K miles and used the Gabriel Quick Struts up front and their Ultra Shocks for the rear. If you want a soft and supple ride the Gabriel's are a good choice also. Only had the car for 2 or so years and it was solid the entire time.

I think Abscate may be off on the strut bearing. I may be off base, but I think he may mean the upper spring seat. Volvo changed all P80 spring seats to the XC90 version due to early failures of the original. The XC90 is a kind of HD unit.

There is a strut bearing as well. Volvo supplies this as well, but the Sachs (OEM) is ok as well.
