threaded inserts are countersunk, it has silicone plugs so you don't trip or get crap in the threads.
they made many improvements since bend pak bought the company from Danmar.

It will be interesting to get your views once you have had it for a while. In some ways I like the idea of not having the posts in the way all the time and the option of moving it to the side. Now if I would ever do that................!

Got the AC leak fixed, was a hard gasket on the condenser driver side line. Changed the wiring harness as the old one was damaged in an accident. The cracker orange marker indicator fell apart in the headlight and made its way to the front :(. another fix for another time, but it is low priority.

(EDIT: Sorry P2. Was reading and didn't change over and started posting)
.
Changed the oil in the 00 S70. Purchased 2 case of 3 gallons per case of Rotella T6 15W40. Someone on BTOG liked using the 15W40 and said he would dilute with the 5W40 if the weather was cooler. Was using Swepco 306 15W40 for years in CA. The 98 S70 T5 (circa 2012) was so smooth, quiet and robust when you exercised the turbo with the dino Swepco. Then accidentally purchased the Rotella T6 one day at $13 a gallon and put it into the 03 Odyssey. Because of the price and was in hurry to do the oil change didn't looked at or mattered which oil. I took a look at the bottle when the van ran really really smooth. Cost made me change over to Rotella.

I think the last change was using Costco's 15W40 dino diesel oil and the car responded well. Even got over 31 mpg on a 140 mile trip on the freeway. Trip computer use the mpg and calculated 615 miles till empty.

Since we are getting into cooler weather I decided to add one quart of Castrol 5W50 just in case it will be too thick. Car is quieter so the tire noise is more pronounced otherwise smooth running. Will see if I get over 32 mpg on the next 140 mile run.

P80GLT wrote: 10 Oct 2023, 03:27 @ MoVolvos Thanks for your kind words, I do sometimes question my own sanity, I keep telling myself I'm not going to give my next car so much care & attention but I always end up going above and beyond what I really should. At the end of the day it's an 18 year old Volvo and although very good it's not museum quality so when needs must it does get pressed into use in inclement weather or situations that I wouldn't use my 850 for. I've protected the underside with Lanoguard in the hope it will prevent corrosion during the winter months, the paintwork has been waxed so should be good to go when the weather deteriorates. Your son sounds like he cares about his car, that's a good sign and something that will stay with him throughout his life.
It's an interesting thing with my Sons. Oldest is attached to the GS430 but is not a car enthusiast. 2nd Son is an enthusiast and enjoys the car besides repairs on it with me and installation of performance parts. In some ways both have good perspective that it's just a car even though the 2nd Son really takes pleasure in his C30.

Two years ago the 2nd Son wanted to try paint correction so we bought a polisher and did a full paint correction with wash, clay bar, two polishing compounds and complete alcohol wipe before Ceramic Coat. Has made it easier to wash for sure though he does the cleaning with his friend, our neighbor. Doesn't think I'm as careful (age really).

Today I replaced the top mount and bearing of ONE strut, I had a new spring seat by FEBEST and lo and behold it is slightly different from the original Volvo one and I anticipated the spring would creak in certain conditions.

So I had to modify it slightly and use sealant to make it stick to the strut and not move around much. After doing everything lo and behold I forgot a washer, the one that sits under the mount(it is made of metal). Only saw it after I had assembled everything and was putting the tyre on. And I am beat, exhausted. So tomorrow I have to do the other one too AND additionally fix the first one as well.

The old bearing....well, someone had incorrectly installed it. The nut(funny looking thing) that holds the mount to the strut had an additional thick as hell rubber washer added, it likely contributed to the significant wear to the old bearing.
