98 v70 FWD: anymore known offroad tires this small?

Post by CIK7 »

Offroading with my front pair of Hankook Kinergy 4s2 h750 tires works okay. I never slipped on a steep hill and the traction in mud was alright. I did find 1 set close enough, the Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail 205/60r16, but they are kinda high ($540/set) for me despite them being on the cheaper side.

Does anyone use other offroad tires? I hunted eBay and Amazon (which cover the main online retailers) for more. Maybe there are others you have used. Please share brand, product line (i.e Falken (brand) WP A/T Trail (product line)), and size.

A quick look on tire rack.com shows the Wildpeaks at $130/ea. if you have a Discount Tire nearby they’ll ship them direct for free.

Being in Oklahoma winter tire probably aren’t the best for wear but certainly some of those have aggressive tread. Maybe an option if you can avoid them in summer.

I plan to have a separate set of wheels for when I want to go on the nearby rattan tail all the way up to nashoba. Not rock crawler status but crazy hills, and decent ruts, worn gravel/mud paths, mud pits. Pretty fun. But with the post Im looking for other offroad tires other than Wildpeaks in the small sizes (its considered small in the offroad realm). EDIT: I have questioned myself on winter tires. I am very familiar with those searches. A really good idea because I am planning to go to Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming in first week of April. EDIT 2: Just realized the reason I got the 2 Hankook 4s2 h750 tires on the volvo (and a set of 4 Michelin CC2 (another intense a/s) on my honda) is because they have the 3 peak snowflake.

It's hard to believe offroading in a p80 is fun. Aren't they way too low for that?

Decades ago you could buy Mud/Snow tires in these sizes anywhere. They would have aggressive tread in long wearing rubber grade. I get it, you want to play in the mud and rough roads. Maybe you could find some old, tall, skinny tires to use. Maybe buy a 240 Volvo with more clearance and rear wheel drive?

The biggest issue (it has been raised before) is that there is limited clearance above the tire and the lower spring seat. Your limitation is that gap in terms of sidewall height. Only other option is to put large spacers on the front hubs to allow taller tires to maybe clear which will load up your wheel bearings and steering. Not sure how wide they would have to be, then you would probably need to modify the fenders to clear the tires.

Very fun indeed! They are pretty low so angle is the method! By that I mean driving any direction other than parallel to the path and/or flat to clear obstacles. I have gone less than halfway both times and turned onto my 'escape' (last chance to dip) route before I got to the more aggressive terrain. I will go all the way and save the footage on my next Rattan/Nashoba Trail adventure. I wonder if I should buy a tape-on exhaust extension for tailpipe end to avoid flooding. LOL I did have that happen once. Made it all the way through the water (went over the tailpipe) to the other side, then the car started to shudder. I turned it off and let it drain on the slight incline. I recently discovered I can use tree branches to unstick my parents zero turn from the mud. I need to remember that for my next offroad adventure.
If and when I choose to buy the Falken Wildpeaks in 205/60r16 I mentioned in my OP, I'll post pics for your satisfaction.
