What the heck is this hose?!

A mid-size luxury crossover SUV, the Volvo XC90 made its debut in 2002 at the Detroit Motor Show. Recognized for its safety, practicality, and comfort, the XC90 is a popular vehicle around the world. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America). P2 platform.

What the heck is this hose?!

The other day I noticed my coolant expansion tank was low and I tracked down a slow drip drip driping from a hose at the very bottom of the engine. The hose in question runs from a 2 way plastic breech-lock manifold (looks integrated with the hose) that connects with the engine block and "lower coolant hose". The other side (hose clamped) connects to a metal tube with another hose on the passenger side.

Looking at the VIDA parts diagrams....nothing really seems to match. The manifold is not on there, nor is the lower metal tube part...and the heater inlet/outlet hoses dont appear to match what Im lookin at. See pics!

What is this hose? Anyone ever replace one? It looks like a major PITA!

I was thinking # 41 because it’s going past the oil pan, but I think you’re right about it being 39. Looks like the guy in the video replaced both.
Looking for a V90 to be my next Volvo, at the very least a T5.

2017 XC90 Inscription - My best Volvo by far, but Ex-wife departed & I had to sell. 😕
2001 S80 T6 - rebuilt trans, head gasket, fixed & sold
1997 V70 - kid car, sold
1996 850 GLT - found under bridge, 2 year refurb project, commuter car, kid car, T-Boned - SIPS saved passenger. Totaled.
1997 VW GTI VR6 - exceedingly fast.
1971 VW Type II/231 - it was pointed out by management that the children would be killed in it.

#38, 39, and 40 should all be replaced at the same time. If one is causing an issue, the others are not far behind with the same age on the rubber and hoses and rubber o-ring connectors. It’s also easier to just remove them as an entire unit with the intake manifold off.

#40 is made of plastic so you risk breaking this trying to remove the other hoses. To remove #39, you might need to remove the fan to give extra room and removing the intake manifold gives you more room. #40 is screwed onto the engine block so you need to remove the intake manifold for proper access.

Also,

Rule of thumb when 1 hose leaks. Make a list and replace them using only Volvo Genuine hoses.

They may cost a few hundreds $, but on the long run, you save $/headache/towing cost etc etc.

I didn't spend the extra money on Volvo-branded rubber hoses and all of my hoses are doing well in my 3.2. I spent it on quality aftermarket OE hoses where I could. Since this engine is shared with Land Rover and made by Ford (FoMoCo), you can save some money by not purchasing the Volvo name. Some hoses won't be available aftermarket, in that case, there is no choice but to go with the original Volvo.

If you use FCP, you will have a lifetime replacement guarantee.

Thanks again everyone. Doh! I just recently had the intake off to replace the alternator.
#39 hose OEM Volvo is $100+, 3rd party euro is $30 and Chinese ebay special is $17. Quite the spread for a rubber tube with a plastic bit!
