Air through vents not very strong

Post by 5rivers »

Greetings!
We had quite the thunderstorm and downpour yesterday and in the process of driving home through this, I attempted to eliminate the fog on the inside of the windshield. When I use the AUT selection, there is plenty of air and coming out the vents very strong, but not much air on the windshield. When I move the vent position dial to defrost the windshield, and temp to 64, 68 or 70 F, even on the highest fan setting, hardly no air is coming out on the passenger side of the windshield, and just a tad more on the driver's side. I was tempted to wipe the inside of the windshield so I could see the road, but there was enough of a clear section to see just above the wiper! So, my question is: what am I facing here? A weak blower motor, plugged up air vents, or other parts gone bad? Where do I start in order to have blower throw air with intent? Appreciate your thoughts and suggestions!

Do you have MCC or ECC heater controls. MCC uses cables to operate the vents and ECC uses servo motors. Either way it could be a bad flap not diverting air to the windshield. To do that the most, first check if you get better flow to the windshield when set to defrost setting, not AUT.

I am not sure if the car has MCC or ECC heater controls, but I do know that when the defrost setting is selected and the fan is on high, there is air coming through the vents to the windshield. It is not very strong, however, in comparison to the volume of air coming through the side vents or the vents above the heater/cooler controls. How would I check to see if a flap is not opening? Appreciate your reply!

If you have an AUT setting it is the automatic version. The MCC doesn't have an AUT.

Usually it is a bad damper flap motor or the gear that is a part of the motor assembly. The motors are located on the sides of the climate unit and you can get to them by removing the lower dash panel on the right hand side and crawling into the foot well on your back. There are three motors, one on the left side and two on the right. The defrost damper motor is on the right hand side, toward the seats I think.

Thanks for your reply, Lee!
I will wait on assessing the motors on each side of the climate control unit; need to make a few more repairs so the car passes NYS inspection! I will keep you posted :)

Hey abscate, how are you?
The grey Volvo has been sitting since the transmission/clutch gave out.
But, the new-to-me dark blue '98 Volvo V70 base is coming along.
Thanks for asking!
I suspect I will be posting more questions as I get into the climate control area.

I missed that the clutch went on silver... 😢

The blue is a nicer color though...

Hello Mr. Rivers,

I was wondering if you found the solution to your problem as I am in the same situation. Cheers!

There did not seem to be a solution included here. I suggest you start a new thread. There are a few recent threads on heating/cooling issues in the cabins of these cars if you do a search for them.
