Possible bad engine / transmission mounts or bushings?

Post by coxj70 »

So I recently bought a used V70 with 179,000 miles on it. Love the car and bought it as a first car for my son who's learning to drive. I've been driving the car and fixing a few things here and there such as the driver window regulator, replacing the radio etc...Very different than the Honda's I'm familiar with. I've replaced the upper center engine mount but have vibration in the drivetrain when slowing to a stop at traffic lights. As the transmission down shifts under braking, I feel a "clunk" as the transmission shifts down. I'd describe it more as a "clunk" as the engine seems to feel like its rocking back and forth possibly? Not sure if this makes sense but with the high miles and condition of the top engine mount when I replaced it, I think its time to swap out the other mounts. Any more experienced Volvo folks that can weigh in?

Thanks!

A little more about the car, it was in a wet weather / snow area previously but don't know where. Just see a lot of surface rust on the under carriage. The car has a tow hitch installed on the rear and its pretty corroded.

Clunking could be coming from the lower torque mount OR loose or missing cv axle bolts. Pop the cover from the rims and see if the center bolt is missing or tighten slightly.

If that doesn't fix it, it's usually broken lower torque mount.

Vibration when coming to a stop is indicative of warped rotors.

.
The clunking I was experiencing from time to time was from a dirty ETM and 3 bad coils. It felt like the lower transmission mount or upper engine mount. It was more of a drive-ability issue rather than mechanical meaning mounts and suspension. This was ongoing for about a year till a couple of days ago. Cleaning the ETM should be the first order of business. Eliminated a lot of shakes, rattles and rolls as in shifting clunking issues.

Didn't removed but just cleaned in place with carb cleaner and a piece of blue shop towel. A piece of cloth or towel would be best in retrospect. Car went from Mr Hyde to back Dr Jekyll. Was hating the drive and contemplating it's departure.

It's a long story but the ETM was causing many of subtle issues on the car.

Greetings !

The cone mounts on the subframe rarely go bad but the front engine mount, passenger side is bearing its expiration date on that car. If you take off the passenger tire, lift the inner wheel liner you can see the beast. A picture will tell us it’s condition

I would do the other engine mounts first, neither are too bad to get at. Need to have a jack under the oil pan for the lower passenger side one.

My 08 S60 has developed a vibration at idle and think I’ll need to do the front center and rear center round ones as others have been done as well as my subframe bushings. I’m at 160k miles.
