98-00 Driver's door master switch help needed!

Post by scot850 »

I am currently cleaning and cataloguing all my smaller used parts. I have been cleaning the 'sticky' goop off the buttons as recommended regularly here by using cotton buds and IPA/rubbing alcohol. Still can't manage to do that without removing all the color down to the white underneath, but then that is not the questions.

1) Is there anyway to test these units out of the car to make sure the buttons work? I'm guessing the answer is probably not as although you can see the mechanical pins moving on the sliders, you can't test the small circuit board to confirm operation? What is the failure cause on these? Is it the sliders and the copper pins wearing out or is it something else?

2) Having cleaned the unit I have (no idea if good or bad), I've found the driver's front button tens to be sticky and the button can stick partly down. If you flick it it returns to normal position. It looked like the sliders may have had some old dried out grease of some sort to allow better movement of the plastic slider. This got cleaned off using contact cleaner. What type of grease is safe to use that won't cause shorts?

Thanks,

Neil.

If my memory serves me right the 98 S70 T5 purchased in 2012 has switch issues. After taking it apart I used fine sandpaper on some the contacts that were burnt. Lubricate when done with dielectric or silicone grease, which is really one of the same. Easier to take the panel off and test them rather than to figure out the switch circuitry.

The switch doctor solution is $25 and is solid state. I cleaned one up once but SWMBO objected to the fire that came out of it a week later

I had a Switch Doctor one but it did not look as good as that. It looked a lot more plastic-y. I used it on a friends car and it lasted about 6 months then died. I have to say the one in the link looks a lot better finished in terms of the plastic. It may be worth investing in a spare. Hopefully the buttons don't go sticky for 20 years..........!

I even have de-electric paste. I may dig out any used spares I have and clean and test them all in one go. Depending on the outcome, I may buy the spare as mentioned anyways.

Thanks guys!

Neil.

I hope their Lifetime Warranty is better than the switch you had bad experience with.

I’ve got two Switch Doctor switches in the fleet now, running 2 and 5 years respectively

I used a non-conductive grease and it made a huge difference to all the buttons and the Driver's window switch stopped sticking. So part put away in storage until I find any others to clean and test as well.
