In all my decades here, I never used (or really noticed) the Active Topics link. I only know P80 so I go directly to that forum. It's sorted by post date, so effectively shows me the active topics that I'll know anything about. I occasionally go to Classifieds and rarely to Car Talk and get the same useful date sorted list.
On other forums I visit, I have used the Active Topics link because I want to see info from all subforums. It's a little less relevant with specialized subforums such as a car repair site.
