Volvo s70 2.5 t/belt wobble

Post by Volvos7025 »

Hi I’m new to Volvo and iv just had my t/belt changed with genuine Volvo belt and idlers as well as new tensioner and aftermarket water pump from scandix Volvo and there is a slight wobble in the belt, just wondering if a bit of wobble is normal.and just wondering if it’s ok for it to be right on the edge

This seems to be becoming a regular issue. It does not tend to be down to one particular issue. The fact you used all original parts you would think that it should all be good, but not even OE parts are as good as they once were. I see you sued a Skandix supplied water pump. Do you know the brand? Again, I usually only recommend OE or OEM (Aisin) pumps due to other members saying they have had issues with other brands.

Having watched your video, it does not look excessive. Belts can take a bit to settle in. It also looks like you replaced the hydraulic tensioner. Was it OE?

Do this at your own discretion and potential peril!

Take a piece of chalk and slowly go near the moving belt till it makes contact with the wobble in question. If it only hits one spot on the belt then most likely the belt width is slightly off. If it's all over then it could be the belt and or other parts. The only way to find out in the second scenario is noise or side belt wear down the line.

Agree with Neil doesn't seem excessive so time will tell.

Hi thanks dor the quick replies (Neil) it was a genuine tensioner aswell bet I’m not sure who the manufacturer of the water pump was but I will have a look and see if it was a ai sun or not.

Hi Movolvos thanks for your advice I will try try the chalk idea and see if it’s just on one bit although I did notice I could see a bit of brown string on the belt on a certain length of it so I don’t know if that’s just a manufacturing defect or if the belt is catching I’m unsure but I did about 300 miles after the video was taken so I will take the cover off again at the week end and see if there is any more signs .

Let's hope it's just the belt and still within tolerance so you don't have to redo the work.

Hopefully i do t really mind the wobble on the gears I just don’t want it to start shredding and then snap or something like that 🫣

It is not possible to tell the brand of the water pump from the Skandix picture. In the picture it looks like it has a brand logo on it but as the 2 options they have look the same it may be a generic picture.

Age and heat is usually what causes a normal belt to snap. In your case there would need to be lots and lots of shredding but you would have caught it via noise or a visual inspection before it progressed anywhere near that condition.
