97 Volvo 850 Basic wagon PNP Switch

Post by andrewjllrar »

I’m repairing the PNP switch, and the only problem I’ve encountered in getting it off is that I can’t get it over the post connected to the transmission. Am I missing something? The PNP rotates slightly right and left but can’t get it over the post.

It's been so long since I took one off ... I don't remember!

Curious to hear the resolution though.

Pry it off with a flat screwdriver but gently.

Muck of Ages, spray with the magic fluid of your choice. Don't forget to block the wheels too, the car will try to roll once it's free.

I replaced mine earlier this year (in Jan 2023 on a '97 855) and the PNP switch just pulled up and off with a little lifting force. It looks like you've got all the nuts removed, so it should just pull up. If they will fit, you could try using two small nylon pry bars on each side and prying up. Good luck!

I agree, it seems that you have all the appropriate bolts removed, it's now just a matter of freeing the PNP from the shaft. Liberal use of your favorite penetrating fluid, (I've had good results with PB Blaster,) let it sit for a while, and work it back and forth.

Good luck!

Screwdriver didn’t work. Rivet removal tool did the trick.
