Using a used tranny instead of replacing the v.b. is a waste of time unless it has the newer v.b. already installed. The original v.b. design was flawed and by getting a used tranny from the wreckers will bring you back to square one.
The new v.b. is of a different design and you should never have any issues again.
$800.00 For a used trans or $800.00 for a new v.b.

Transmission slow to shift into drive, 2002 XC70
I have heard "Auto rx" (autorx.com) is the product to use concerning sluggish solenoids and dirty valve bodies. Alot of info about it on the "bobistheoilguy.com" website as well as some here if you use the search feature. Might be an inexpensive cure to an otherwise costly problem. I've used it with good results. It disolves deposits and varnish build up slowly to free and lubricate moving parts. Money back guarantee too. What do you have to loose but $800.
Anybody have any experience with this product?

Is there any reason why you do not share with us the part number and source for the valve body? Please ...

JRL may have the answer here but many who did the V.B. only have had a temporary fix...is this right?? Therefore, if there's a choice a new transmission may be a better option. I would also avoid any '01 (and maybe even early '02) transmissions.

As for plopping in a used tranny from an 03 and newer, not sure. I think the electrics may not match up to your (01) TCM

Just call the local Volvo dealer for the part number. That is all I did. They are the only source for a new valve body and you will be stuck buying it there. I didn't make note of my part number. I did post some pics somewhere but can't find them. I may have posted it on the "other" Volvo site.PierreC wrote:2002V702002V70 wrote: The new v.b. is of a different design and you should never have any issues again. $800.00 For a used trans or $800.00 for a new v.b.

I received a small discount from list price ( 5-10%) but the bulk of the money I saved was buying it in the USA instead of here in Canada.
I would love to know if the 2003 and later tranny will go into the '01-'02. If the wiring harness is the same it "should" fit. Anyone with 2 cars side by side?
I have an Ashgold Metallic 2002 V70XC. I absolutely love it. However, about 2 years ago, I started to notice problems with my transmission and at first, it was just slow shifting from R to D, and than it evolves into hard shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, so I brought the car in to the dealer, every time, they would tell me, it's not a big deal, there is something wrong with it but we don't have the computer code for it, so don't worry about. I even had a transmission upgrade done, same thing still happens, so I did not worry about it until recently, about 1 weeks ago, I finally decided this is not normal and took my time to find a good garage and taken my car in for diagnostic. It turns out that there were a lot of things wrong with my transmission, first, the valve body needs to be replaced, after they replaced it it won't hard shift from 2nd to 3rd anymore instead from 3rd to 2nd, so they took my car in to a transmission place and now it's waiting for my warranty company to give them a dollar amount to decide whether I need a used transmission, a rebuilt transmission or rebuilding my transmission. So , if you have transmission problem, get it taken care of before it gets very expansive.

Anyone thought about getting together and make Volvo be responsible for all our transmission problems? Afterall, they did manufacture the car?
Let me know. In my mind, they at least have to pay for a new transmission for all of our headaches. Because, Volvo is supposed to be known for reliability.
