2008 3.2 XC70 Hatch Latch lock and unlock issue

I have a 2008 XC70 that if you unlock the doors with the fob and go to the hatch and try to manually open the latch it is like it is locked and does not engage or pull anything. However if you push the hatch button and let the automatic system open the hatch, then close it. Only then can you use the latch handle to manually open and close the hatch. The reason I am concerned is if the automatic system fails I will not be able to get into my hatch. Has anyone had this problem and have a fix for it? Thank you.
