Orange Up arrow in D3 and Dl

Post by 5rivers »

Greetings all,
I had to drain the transmission fluid from my '98 V70 T5 the other day so I could remove and replace the cover that houses the transmission dipstick (it had two pin-sized holes on one side).
After putting in the same amount of fluid that was drained, less an ounce or two, and taking the car out for a test drive, I noticed when I shifted into Drive 3 the orange up arrow lit up on the dash. The same thing happened when I shifted into Drive L. When in Drive, Reverse, or Neutral, the orange up arrow disappeared.
Any idea what the up arrow means and why only in the two lowest Drive options?
I did check the fluid level after running the car about 10 minutes, on the cold side of the stick, it was about midway. Maybe I need to add more fluid?
Appreciate your thoughts and expertise!
Be well :)

I don't really know. This is the first time I have shifted the car into the low Drive options. The car came with a few faults, but I never noticed anything transmission related. The orange up arrow is constant when in Drive 3 and Drive L. It is not flashing.

Yep, that’s normal. The arrow alerts you that you aren’t in the standard transmission DRIVE mode , either by moving the shift lever or by depressing the SEW buttons, or the W button , depending on car trim level.

The shift pattern is determined by both the lever and the status of the button.

In standard mode, selecting 3 or L just stops the transmission for shifting higher Than that gear.

With the .W button depressed, the shift pattern is ...

Driving mode selector

The buttons at the base of the gear lever allow you to select the Winter/Wet driving mode.

W Winter/Wet mode
Enhanced Vehicle Traction
This mode may be selected for starting/moving off on slippery roads.

In position D*, the gearbox starts in 3rd gear and changes up to 4th gear.
In position 3*, 2nd gear is locked and there is no change up to 3rd gear.
In position L, 1st gear is locked.

If the up arrow flashes, there is a transmission code logged for a fault, so watch out for that.
