Problem with Onboard diagnostic system?

Hi,
We've been happy with Volvo, and our dealer service for a long time. Had an old S60 for over 20 years and they kept it going.
Now have a 2017 S60 bought new.
Check engine light went on. Next day was off. Week later it was on. Took it in, back in April. Report says they replaced manifold absolute pressure sensor. Light went off. A month later, light came on again. Dealer kept it three days. Said they reset it, drove it a while. Returned it. After another month or two, light came on again! Dealer kept if for a week. Gave us a loaner. Didn't really seem to find the problem. Gave us the car back.

If this comes back. do we have to get a new car? Any idea on if the whole diagnostic system needs to be replaced? If so, the cost?
I appreciate any comments. If it comes on again, we will be talking to our dealer's service manager. We already paid for the mainfold absolute pressure sensor. If it's not obvious, I don't know much about cars. Our dealer is reputable and honest, but any suggestions of possible next steps? Any advice would be appreciated. Our warranty has run out, but should the diagnostic system just fail?

HI Ed. The diagnostic system would not fail. As a component of cars, it's a fairly large item (not necessarily physically large though). The whole system might fail say for instance in a case of a flood, but day in/day out, no.

Parts of the system can and do fail on cars all the time. It sounds like your dealer replaced one of these parts -- a sensor. It may or may not have been on the path to bringing your S60 back to full health, I just don't know from where I sit.

Sometimes dealers do replace parts on faith, as part of narrowing down the possibilities. This can be a grey area in terms of legitimate work, but sometimes is not a grey area and is truly the only option. Again, I don't know.

You can either continue with tracking this down at the dealer, take it to an independent Volvo garage, or live with the light (not recommended).

Hi, Mathew,
Thanks for the quick response.
Here's the text of what our dealer did.
After this the check engine light came back on.
The last time they held it for five days and it stayed off, but we're concerned about next steps if it comes back on.
I appreciate any advice.

Hm, not much meat on those bones... I'd take it back in and get to the next step. Then when it turns out to be something else, ask for a refund or partial refund for the MAP sensor replacement.
