Rebuilding 98 v70 throttle spring assembly

Post by yanga001 »

I decided to rebuild the throttle spring on my 98 v70 as they seized up while in storage up north. It seems that rust can build up on the rotating shaft where the throttle cable links to the throttle assembly. This rust can bind up the shaft and lead to a sticky throttle.

There is a spring on this rotating part and one on the engine itself. I found that the one on the engine can be freed with penetrant and cycling but the other spring required more work.

The assembly is held together with a c clip that locks a washer, rotating assembly, and spring to the body. I used a hammer to free the rusted c clip and then pulled it off.

From there I pried off the plastic body from the metal shaft as it was frozen on with rust.

Once off I applied a liberal amount of rusoleum rust dissolver to the shaft to remove the rust.

After 3 applications the shaft looked closer to normal and the plastic body rotated free Lyndon it.

I applied a liberal amount of sil-glyde to the shaft and reassembled the assembly.

Note during assembly the spring goes on in a way where the portrusion for the linkage touches the body. This requires about 90 degrees of extra rotation to reseat the plastic body in the proper position with the stoppers.

Whole process took 30 minutes the first time, and it solved a sticky throttle I have been getting in lightly used engines.
