V70 2.5T AWD transmission leak

Post by reigox »

Hey, i have a problem with my transmission, it is leaking from the weep hole and from one other place aswell, i don't know what it is called.
It happened right after i drifted a little bit on the snow, a lot of transmission oil just leaked out on the ground, i checked the dipstick right after it happened and it was bone dry. Pulled it to a garage, checked the dipstick 2 days later (with a cold engine and transmission) it was even over the HOT line. How is this possible? What could be the explanation?

Are you checking with the engine running or off? Checking when hot or cold will show level differences on the dipstick also. I believe you should be check the trans fluid when with engine on. Be sure it's not engine oil per "jonesg". Transmission fluid is not that thick and has a different flow characteristics. That's why it's transmission fluid not oil as in motor oil.

Lastly, do a smell test.

Did you drift into anything? The first thing you can do is try a bottle or two of a seal rejuvenator such a AT 205. If the problem is lessened then you know it's a seal otherwise something cracked or a hose somewhere perhaps. Without digging around the engine bay from the top to bottom and checking the lines of the transmission I would say your guess is as good as mine.

ATF fluid level check is performed with the engine running.

The explanation could be the last guy who changed the fluid didn't know how to do it right and overfilled it. Warm it up, check the level. MIN is where it should be at 40 degrees Celsius, MAX is at 80.

Ill check the transmission fluid then when its running and warm. I didnt drift into anything, just randomly felt a weird smell and saw that a lot of transmission fluid was on the ground.

If it is where the transmission and engine mate, there is most likely a pump seal that is going bad.

Should i just take off the transmission and check it out visually, change seals that need to be changed? This is my only idea what to do, Is it the best option?

before dropping trans I'd have a mechanic put it on a lift and inspect it, they're good at finding leaks.
