Holidays are over, so starting to think again about if its economical to keep the 1985 850 turbo wagon going.
Can I remove the turbo and just lose some performance? Or will the computer go nuts?
Looking online for turbo rebuild shops, my mechanic doesn't have any recommendations for a local shop. He fears that you can't get parts for it anymore, which could only be discovered after the expense of removing, shipping, taking apart.
I parked it beside a Subaru Outback and was not impressed with the Subaru, but they just don't make wagons anymore.
Maybe a used Volvo V60 or V90, but that's more money than I'd want to lay out, I think.

No, you can not just remove the turbo.
You could post here in the classified's that you're looking to buy a used turbo. I think yours is a 15G, so should be available.
If you want a complete rebuilt unit, then there is a guy over on Swedespeed ( scottishbrick ) that rebuilds them.

A good used turbo is under $200. Do that. Or get a rebuilt one from ScottishBrick as suggested above. Top notch stuff from a fantastic guy

Thanks for that data. years ago could not join that forum due to google captcha not working, but got in today so I'll contact the guy.
The KBB price for my 1995 850 wagon is about $500-600. Seeing a local dealer with a 1998 V70 GLT wagon, "call for price" but KBB is about $500. Now if the engine is shot, could I drop my recently rebuilt engine into it & swap the turbos ??? Of course I'd have to pay a mechanic. Maybe offer to pay their price for that if they give me the car for free... Feeling wishful today.

You won’t find a dealer selling anything much under $2500.
Turbos litter eBay at $150 pricing , as kids pull them from junk cars because they are cool. They rarely go wrong so the market is oversupplied
