Oil leak behind timing cover - 2007 XC70 170k miles

Sorry, missed your post saying you already replaced the Exhaust VVT.

Cam seals: brand matters, what brand did you use?
FYI: Corteco is the genuine mfg.
I use Corteco, zero issues.

The Intake VVT: check the play.

PS: When was the last time you checked the PCV system?

I used Genuine Volvo cam seals, so those should be fine.

Is there a way to check VVT endplay with the timing belt on? Assuming not..

For the PCV: I do a glove test every oil change. Still pulls a good vacuum. Is there a different test you’d recommend?

I just cleaned all the old oil off behind and below the timing cover. I’m starting to think this might all just be stuff I didn’t clean when I did the exhaust VVT — it’s been on there long enough to totally soften the plastic at some points on the outer cover (pliable like soft rubber now).

That glove test result gives you what you need to know: pulling vacuum so this leak is not due to crankcase pressure from clogged PCV.

The crank seal rarely leaks period. Don't think I would ever replace it preventively (never have, never (!) will ...).

that might be a rubber seal. Clean it up and inspect closely.
