I'm using the 850 OBD2 app to check values. I'm having issues with it connecting. What ECU system does my 99 use? If I use standard OBD2, I can read some values, but I'd rather use the manufacturer specific protocols.

Intake air seemed ok, but where is the sensor? I thought it was the one on the left hand side under the bumper, but it got warmer than I'd expect for that location. Coolant seemed fine. It was in the 160s after a short drive. Something definitely seems to be heat sensitive, as when it's really warmed up, it behaves fine. If it's just warm form a short run, it doesn't run well.

It did stall on my today on first startup, and I had the door open, and could tell it was running rich. It reminded me of starting a small engine, like a snowblower.
Yeah, the rich running is a telltale sign of the coolant temperature sensor being a potential culprit. The 850 OBD app won't work on the '99, you would either need to use VIDA or generic OBD2. Either one should be able to read the coolant temp just fine.

The sensor under the bumper is ambient temperature, the intake temp sensor is on the charge pipe just before the throttle body. The tall sensor is for intake temp, the flatter one with the angled connector is boost pressure.

Hardest part was actually figuring out the dipstick, the whole process and I don't know if this is universal but one side would read properly while the other would end up with wiped on ATF way up the stick.
Lots of sloshing around during the fill process, check it again - running - and pay attention to the 'cold' line if it hasn't been running long. Overfilling is not a good thing.

Agree with bmdub, likely the hydraulic mounts have given up front and rear.

Rebuilt my headlights and used my jewels. Finally hooked up the high beams as well. Once the cars running again, I'll pull it outside and adjust the beams before I put the glass back on.

Any sort of glass polishing techniques would be appreciated lol.

So I've been offered a supposedly intact dashboard, one of the scrappers/breakers here for Volvos claims it's intact and the top has no cracks or breaks. The part that makes me doubt is he's reluctant to sell just the top, wants me to get the entire dash.

Now my problem is I've seen a video on youtube where they tried to fit a new dash but ran into some sort of compatibility issues, I'm worried that this might happen to me and I have no space for the entire dash. What should I look out for, or should I just stay form on dash top only?

Not aware of any issues with the dash top/pad on 850's. As long as it is an 850 then it should fit.

What I would check for is damage to all the mounting points as plastic can become brittle with age. I replaced my lower dash last year on my 00 V70R as it had broken in so many places.

If he is insisting you take the whole dash, check the 4 mounting points for the lower dash to the firewall. They usually break and/or crack. If this is the case, then I would politely refuse to take it. Also check the 2 lower mounts to the A-pillar as they also break.

The other thing to check on the dash pad is for cracking around the passenger airbag.

I do recall the 850 dash pad is a little trickier to remove than the later version, but not hugely so. Just watch for flexing as it is removed as it can damage the structure.

Good luck!

Neil.

I believe you're the best person to ask. I have the climate control with the auto, while the one being sold is the mechanical type. I read there are differences but is there anything that would prevent it from being swapped over? Seller wants to keep it intact, with the cluster, radio, everything. A lot more work than just the dashpad and a lot more money.

All of the 850 dashes and pads I have encountered have been compatible. You can't swap the parts between the 850's and the S/V/X70's, though.

I've had a couple dashes and at least 3 different pads in my T5. No issues with fitment. I have a spare pad I need to get into my wife's car when the weather is a bit nicer for working with delicate plastics.

There are couple hidden bolts that install vertically in front of the glove box. The rest are all easy to find (Take out the speaker grills and the air vents), and the 4 10mm-headed bolts that mount the air bag to the dash brace are easily removed once the glove box is out of the way.
Sometimes getting the pass side of the pad, with the airbag in it, to pop up and out is a little tough. (Again pointing out the two extra fasteners that are kind of hidden there)
Be mindful to support the pass side a bit to avoid bending/flexing of the pad, as you'll have the weight of the airbag still in there. The airbag is easy to remove once the pad is out (if they won't sell it out of the yard, which is the case a lot here)

Installing a replacement pad you need to be mindful when inserting the front edge of the pad into its spot on the dash at the window. That top plastic is the most fragile bit of material I have ever come across. Make sure you have that properly aligned in the slot BEFORE you try and push it home to get the rest of the dash pressed back and down to get it in place.

It's my understanding that glass can be polished with Cerium Oxide, but that's about all I know.

If you have ECC (Electronic climate control) it sounds like the other one may be MCC (mechanical control). If you don't want the rest of the dash, just swap over the top. Can't think why you need to swap it all over. It is a lot more work, unless you want to go and check the dash mounts for damage. It is possible Volvo have different dashboards, but I'd be surprised if you cannot convert the other one over with different fittings probably all ready there.
