Brake-ish shutter?

Post by AlanS »

1995 850 wagon- Upon braking at very low speed, you can feel a 'growl' and vibration from the brakes (seems like front). It is NOT the rotor or pads... As you slow down (we are talking 1-2mph), right before complete stop, this happens...when you let off the pedal...all gone.
My wife wonders if it is in the ABS system...I don't know where to start.

Why do you say it's not rotors or pads?
Sounds like either the pads are shot or mismatched, (different brand of rotor and pads)

Like JRL said, rotors/pads are first suspect. If you rule them out then there's a bunch of other suspension parts that can cause this. Spring seats, control arm bushings, tie rods, etc. Anything that can allow the suspension to "slap" back and forth with low oscillation during braking...

Wow, what an old post that’s exactly what’s happening to me. My 98 S70 T5 has had random ABS issues and now it’s doing the same as you describe. I agree it’s not the rotors or pads too. Did you ever find out what was your issue and did you fix it?

Based on your location, I would be checking the ABS reluctor rings for cracks or build up of rust or dirt.

Pads cand rotors cand be an issue here. This was a common issue for many years with groaning or squealing pads. Glazed rotors or even a partly sticking caliper can cause this issue at the front or rear.
