Temp Axle Boot Mending

Post by MoVolvos »

.
This the second time I've had to get by with a broken axle boot mending. Didn't have the confidence I could reboot both ends before it got dark. This time the boot was completely separate whereas the first time it was just half way opened. It looks like whoever worked on it previously just wiped the grease from the chassis and left it alone. Was starting to hear a little groaning in the suspension so decide to investigate the other day and found it. Since the car is headed to VA for a bit tomorrow I decided to just to grease it and send it off.

The first temp repair on the 08 C30 T5 lasted I think 1.5 years till we replaced the axle. The axle didn't have any issues so will replace the boot and keep it as a spare. The OE M66 axles are expensive besides not as readily available as the auto. This is what I would do if I had to get by again. The first two mending were both the inner driver's side boot. Below is the pic of the 2009 S60 AWD that I temp mended today. Was getting dark so didn't take a picture of the result. The noise is gone and car drives well.
.
Raise the front end, remove the tire on the side with the affected boot and put the car in neutral. This is so another person can spin the wheel on the other side while you guide the self adhering tape.

NOTE: Be sure to wrap in a clockwise rotation on the driver's side and counter clockwise on the passenger. This way the tape will not unravel backwards.

1) Clean or wipe the inside of the CV joint as much as you think it's necessary.
2) Use brake clean on a rag and clean the outer boot as the other person spins the wheel.
3) Squeeze one pack of 80g of axle grease into the bearing distributing evenly.
4) Use a wider self sticking soft wire loom electrical tape, progressively wrap around the boot several times then around the cracked or split area using small overlap.
5) Use a narrow strip of Saran Wrap double or triple folded around the split overlapping the grooved in the boot on each side and shape.
6) Use the self sticking electrical tape over the Saran Wrap.
7) Once done put pressure on the self sticking tape to shape but not on the split area.

.
Cleaned and ready for the grease and mending.

Sounds like a good temporary fix. I’ve just swapped in an inexpensive shaft…risk of procrastinating though as it is still there 13,000 miles later.

Know what you mean. Thought about a cheap axle but decided to try rebooting with the FCP kit. The OE axle only has 115K miles so thought I take a chance on it rather than a potential vibration of aftermarket, then have to reinstall again.

they sell repair sleeves that go over the torn boot, never tried one but I looked at a few.

I'll have to research those. Perhaps it's something I was thinking about the other day. Clean and grease then taking an use boot cut in half, then overlapping the bad one with the bigger grooves and zip tie both ends. Apply the tape and that should seal it well till one can get to the axle.

I've used the split boot a couple of times on 80's Honda and VWs but didn't find any for Volvos. The inner is also really tight to work on.
