I would consider disconnecting the DEM power supply while you troubleshoot, that will isolate the front ( transmission, CV Axles, etc) . There’s nothing likely catastrophically wrong with the angle gear and points aft. I don’t understand why the propshaft would spin with the car not moving but the haldex will try to couple if it’s getting a signal that the front wheel(S) are slipping, maybe it’s getting an erroneous signal. I would take the haldex out of the equation by unpowering it and go from there.

Hope it is CV shafts, way cheaper and more DIY than transmission!

Once I removed the splash guard it was an easy diagnosis and simple fix - passenger's CV dislodged due to slippage of the half shaft through the carrier bearing. Easy fix because the other 07 is, unfortunately, laid up right now with engine problems.
Notice the uniform rust layer on this aftermarket axle, and the shiny surface where the carrier bearing started out. The shaft must have vibrated outward over time while the carrier bearing was held in place, until the CV splines finally slipped out of the transmission. And the other end at the transmission, shiny surface indicates how far the axle has backed out of the trans: This is what the carrier bearing is supposed to look like, from the other XC70: And the two axles side by side, you can see the distance to the carrier bearing is wrong: The splines looked OK on the end of the bad axle so I swapped in the axle from the laid up XC70, and everything seems fine so far.

Wow.
So no limited slip at the transaxle - if one half shaft fails, no forward motion.

Good news, and another justification for not using aftermarket axles!

I saw a post from vtl where he said something to the effect of "it's better to use XC90 axles in your XC70" does anyone know the details of doing that?
I may get one new set for the most road-worthy XC70, want to consider the options.

Interestingly, Volvo does not employ a circlip on the inner side of the carrier bearing.
Maybe there is no need to.
I wonder if a worn-out suspension + deep potholes, allow the axle to pull outward excessively...
This is "DIY carrier bearing for a 2007 S40 (not S60)", but very interesting to watch:

The standard carrier bearing is hard to drift onto the axle and equally hard to remove. You could 'stake' the bearing face and hammer the bearing back to it's correct position, and also stake with a pointed centerpunch around the outer surface by the bearing to prevent it moving again. There are also glues for bearings that you could use to prevent this happening again and then re-use the axle.
Is this a P2 thing? On the P80's with either the 2 or 4 bolt lower control arm I can't see how the axle could move outward or load the carrier bearing like this to move.
Neil.
