850R ECU Identity?

I am helping a buddy reduce his stock of parts (and no, not by buying them all!). I have identified and sorted all of the first batch of parts, but one still bugs me.

He says it was something he bought that was supposed to be from a 96 850R. I don't know why, but someone has removed all the identifying labels and has hand written the 96 850R label on it.

If I am correct it would be labelled:

P01270240 and Bosch# 0 2610 203 628 - 7.2 if I am correct.

If I have to open the case, is there any info internally that would help confirm the ID? I am more concerned that it has not been 'tuned'. Again is there any way to tell that. Appreciate if it has been 're-flashed' with a new tune it may not be easy to check for that.

Not really any way to identify internally, and you can't "read" it without specialized equipment.

It's possible it's A) a stock -628 M4,3 ECU that someone didn't like the labels on. B) Another M4.3 ECU that someone has flashed the stock -628 R bin onto, or C) a modified ECU that someone had in their 850R.

I've flashed a couple M4.3 ECUs with stock -628 R bins, but didn't remove any of the other labels and just ID'ed them on the case as such.

That was what I thought would be the case. Thanks for confirming. I was hoping that maybe there was a pcb part number or specific ship that may have a unique identifier. I guess the reality is that they are probably all the same boxes, just different programs.

My 628 was a P#...240.

Yes, but this has NO labels at all. It just has a marker used to write '96 850R?' on it.

It's honestly all in the programming.

As long as it's from a turbo car, all of the ECUs are the same internally. (The NA ECUs didn't have some of the components installed in the boards)

Thanks Chuck and Matthew. It is OK. My buddy is an ex-Volvo mechanic and runs a 97 850 AWD manual (As they all were in Canada). He just loves that car and has played with it and I think I recall him saying it is running a 03 T5 intake and turbo. It also has 00 V70R rear vented rotors and the larger fronts. He drives the car hard!

He can decide what he wants to sell the ECU as, as he was the one that originally bought it.

Is there also a difference between ECU's for manuals and autos? I saw on a link to IPD website that didn't seem to make any differential between 850 ECU's and it did for '98 V/S/C 70's.

There are differences in the Auto vs Manual ECUs, and are listed as separate in the Motronic Suite stuff.

Where do I find the Motronic info? I found the info for the V/S/C70 -98 on an IPD link, but nothing was shown differentiating auto/manual trans for the 850's.
