Interesting to compare to the 777 quiet success. Designed and flown long before the M-D merger. It's tough, it's reliable. They've only lost 8 hulls in all that time, and none of them were the fault of the airplane - one shot down by the Russians, one flown off into the southern Indian ocean by a nutcase, one hit the seawall long before the runway in San Francisco because the pilot screwed up the approach. An engine blew apart over Denver and it safely returned and landed. This is the plane Juan Browne flies. "Old Boeing"

I just happened to be driving down I-5 past Boeing Field when an early test plane was coming in to land and we traveled side by side for a few seconds (I-5 is a couple hundred feet above the field so I was level with the plane - pretty cool)

I was in a local techy machine shop here recently. They do aerospace components. They have top notch computer controlled milling machines in glass booths. Everything was in thousandths.

I needed exact 9mm holes - they just converted it.

My 2 cents (0.02 dollars):
If a technical system (engineering, manufacturing,and inspection) as large as Boeing tried to make the transition from imperial to metric, the chaos might be an overwhelming shock to the system.

Keep in mind these aircraft are all flying on the original Airworthiness Certificate issued ca. 1968. Since it was designed and built using SAE specs, that is the standard that has to be continued to keep Boeing from having to start over - you know, like they should have anyway.
