Any advice on what to do with the crumbling electrical installation? The wires themselves are pretty hard, they almost feel like they might snap.
wrap or replace if you can, finding shorts is tough, try wiggle tests whilst monitoring with a meter.

Got my down pipe bolted up to the rear exhaust again and soldered the o2 sensor wire i cut, couldn't get to the plug so cutting the wire was easier, all soldered up with heat shrink and gorilla tape over everything, looks fine. 5 wires to the front O2 sensor, took a lot of soldering.

Just a matter of putting everything back now.

Today I redid timing belt and tensioner. Which means I locked crankshaft, camshafts and moved VVT all the way to the right aka clockwise to its limit position. This was done just in case.

Next I decided to measure voltages and I measured 14.7v going up to the VVT solenoid wire with engine running. Shouldn't it be regulated stable 12v? Anyway, the ECU cannot detect or control the VVT.
I also keep getting error code P1177 which is related to weird signal from rear oxygen sensor. Perhaps it's dead? Keeps showing too low voltage

I also did some experiments, I unplugged cam sensor from car -> resulted in error code but no change in engine operation. I unplugged MAF plug , no change in engine operation which is weird. I also dont remember it tripping a code. Otherwise, MAF works according to live data.

My next attempt is to remove ECM, and check continuity(and short to gnd) of all pins on the breakout box to their corresponding signal wire. Secondly I will open the ECM to inspect for burnt components.

Saw my two girls today for the first time in 6 weeks. Val on the left and Kära on the right have been tucked up in the dark since New Year whilst I was off to warmer climates enjoying the sun while everyone back home in Scotland was freezing their bits off...

I've a bunch of sensors disconnected and drove around like half a mile, also without VVT. Performance loss for sure but it runs. VIDA codes I get are ECM-4400(this is for cng stepper motor not petrol mode), ECM-6400(disconnected vvt so expected) mostly. However the OBD codes I get are different and do not match what probing with my VIDA-like tool reports.
OBD codes are P1177 and P1176, essentially either Cam calibration fault/Correction behind catalyst) caused by downstream oxygen sensor.

Problem is no matter how many times I set the timing belt tensioner, in the normal 20c position, it ALWAYS goes to the 50c position to its most biggest(most right position past 50c in fact) position when running. I dont understand why.
Ok regarding timing belt tensioner, peppermint to the rescue he speifically mentions INA which is what I am using and how the needle is moving when tensioning center bolt for other users as well.
So beware of using INA timing belt tensioners.

Today I did finish walnut blasting the head.
Also took some measurements with a straightedge and a thickness gauge, the head is not bent!
My thinnest gauge (0.04mm, 1.6mil) did not fit through. So milling is not necessary.
Upcoming days I'll give it a good clean and then start to reassemble the engine.
While I'm in, also replacing every gasket I see.
Really keen to see, if replacing the head gasket and valve stem steals did something for the blowby.

Just because you're trash, doesn't mean you can't do great things.
It's called garbage can, not garbage can not.

You still want to polish the head. It inevitably has depressions (low areas) between combustion chambers and water channels.
