2006 xc90 2.5t and the Aisin sounds like a kazoo

Post by Kaptain »

Got my first volvo last year. 06 xc90, 2.5t. 215,000miles.
In November, the awd went out. Was told the angle gear coupler died, congratulations you've just won a Front Wheel Drive car unless you do it yourself or pay big bucks. I'm capable but don't have the time or place to do it.

On valentines day I noticed a faint, buzzing, soft kazoo sound coming from the trans when engine braking from highway speeds down to about 20mph. It has a bit of a cyclical pattern to it and rises with every down shift, from 65mph getting louder and louder as it approaches 20mph

So I'm told the planetaries are the culprit, causing the gears whining. There is a huge trans company near me that I trust very much and he tells me they can't get volvo trans from rebuilders and basically all the volvos go back to dealerships.

Online estimate of replacing it are about $6600, which seems low to me considering g the nature of dealerships. But it might as well be a million since the car isn't even worth that in resale.

I'm guessing I'm screwed on this deal aren't I?

Thanks,
Rick

A used transmission is an option but a bit of a roll of the dice. Surprised an independent shop wouldn’t tackle an Aisin?

I’d start with a fluid drain and fill—a long shot but should cost you less than $50.

More likely, it is the grinding noise from the stripped angle gear.

I had the car on the lift at dealer, they listened to the noise using the stethoscope while engine was running on the lift and confirmed the noise was from the stripped angle gear. The Volvo dealer's diagnostic charge was $35.

I never fixed it and have been driving as FWD.

Is this the sound you're experiencing by any chance shown in the video below? I called this sound in my vid a gear whine but that was my best guess. Do the think the sound is more of a buzzing or a whirring? I don't know what you call the sounds in my vid. A kazoo is an interesting analogy though, maybe it's a match. Check it out please.
