Volvo s70 1997 rim upgrade

Post by perhss70 »

As I will change tires in the summer I was wondering if I could use a bigger wheel too.
Currently I have the meteor 16' wheels with 205/55 tires and when turning full it rubs with the car. Is there any 17' wheel-tire combo that wouldn't rub or rub but not more than currently?
Not only from p80s but does any of the newer wheels fit?

This subject has been covered many times here. There was a thread on this about a month ago.

The issues you have to watch for is as you have seen, is rubbing on full lock on turning on the front inner fender liners, and at the rear the parking brake cable rubbing on the back of the tires, especially if the plastic look that is riveted to the trailing arm has corroded and fallen off.

On the back of Volvo rims the size is usually molded into the rim casting with diameter, rim width and offset.

P2 model rims fit, but unlike the P80.s they have greater offset (49mm v's 36-43mm on P80's). You could use wheel spacers to move these outward to prevent rubbing.

Are you seeing rubbing on both sides? My car was fine until the dealer replaced the sub-frame bushes. It now rubs on one side only. I am running 17" P2 rims on my car. The only difference is there is more room on the rear due to the different way the AWD parking brake cables is fitted.

Tire width is a debate. I am running 225/45/17" tires. But this may be a little wide for FWD cars.

Main thing to watch for is the wheel width of the rim. Every 1" wider it moves half that closer into the car as well as half outward. Then if you have a larger offset you need to add that in as well.

I'm not sure but I think both sides have rubbing one side must have a bit more. Probably there is something wrong with the steering rack but not wrong enough for me to bother swapping out. (Also in full lock one side makes some whining noise) I will check other threads for info thanks!

I should have added, check that the 2 limit stops are on your lower control arms at the front. There should be a nylon rubbing strip rivetted to the front of the lower control arm. These fall off over time due to wear, damage and usually the aluminum rivets failing. If these are missing the wheels can turn too far at the front of the tires and will hit the inner fenders.

I have seen several hears ago where someone modified the limit stop on the frond of the hubs so they hit slightly earlier to stop this issue. It will affect the turning circle though.

I would also check that the front subframe bushes are not worn allowing the frame/wheels to move when turning.
