But this is like a 15 minute job, it's not like debris will be flying around. Using oil will also help to contain the swarf.

Hey Foggy - a little bird told me you have a cylinder head currently off a car. Could you measure or SWAG the thickness of the head for me at tthe point where the M7 cover bolts go? I will post the exact one to measure here

Yup, on both. I'll pull a bolt out of Old Blue, too.
In DC, back in DE in the AM.
If you already own a regular M8 tap, investing in a bottom tap to follow up would make a better job of it.

From the parting line of the cam cover surface to the bottom of several blind holes I got ca. 22.97mm
The cover itself at the bolt hole pad seems to be ca. 20.30, but I had a hard time getting a good read due to circumstances beyond my control ( the head is in an awkward spot, it was raining a Deluge, and I didn't feel like emptying the back of the car.)
