Hard power steering 2008 S60 2.5T (NON SPEED SENSITIVE)

Post by yanga001 »

Making this thread to document the troubleshooting and symptoms i have noticed in my s60. (268k km)

Since picking it up in April 23' ive put about 25000 km on the vehicle. I flushed the power steering system with volvo fluid and have noticed the steering slowly get harder and harder. That is, it takes more effort across the board to turn the wheel then other vehicles. It is not stiff spots (had that from a steering knuckle in my 98') and i notice a slight groan from the passenger side when turning the wheel. There are no power steering leaks in the system, however the fluid that came out looked dark during the flush.

I suspect a bad power steering pump as the remainder of the system appears in good condition. If i do go about changing the pump then ill document photos here.

Does anyone have a n-m force standard/measurement for this wheel. I know most Hondas are at 30 nm i believe.

Whenever I cold start my S60 2005 the steering is buttery smooth until about a minute or two later when it stiffens regardless of speed. I do think it's the pump.

my previous volvo had the opposite symptoms, hard steering at first but as it built pressure it became easier .
That was diagnosed to be a bad pump. i never bothered fixing it.
