P80 Front Axle painting question

Post by scot850 »

I am trying to finally get this axle off of long term squatting on my workbench. I have been waiting for warmer weather to save on having to heat the garage to a high temp for a long time to allow paint to dry.

Anyway, better weather is allegedly around the corner, so the last thing I plan to do is just touch up some of the rusted areas on the end with the tone/reluctor wheel on it. I have cleaned the rust, but the thing I can't remember is how far does the paint go toward the splines?

I know there is a seal that goes on there, and probably don't want to have paint where that fits. Can anyone tell me how far to paint from this picture?:

I plan to give it another quick wire brush, some rust killer, then a coat or 2 of Por-15.

So any help on working out the point to stop would be appreciated. I am thinking the edge of the sharp 90 degree drop to the shaft diameter but not on that face.

Consider chrome. How will you win the car shows?

I’ve been trying to chrome parts in my garage, but it’s just too cold for it to dry.

Are you talking out to this point? Paint over the tone ring?

There was paint originally on the face between the tone ring (which is painted/coated from new) and your arrow tip. What I don't know is if it continues down from your arrow tip to the start of the radius.

I can't recall where the axle seal to the hub sits and where it contacts. I don't think I want to paint where it contacts as it would potentially stick to the seal and damage it.

Looks like you could paint that face from arrow inward. It seems apparent where the seal makes contact, and it's not on that semi-rusted surface.

Why paint it? No real reason to. I'd just clean it up as best you can and leave it be.

I like to leave stuff on the shelf in ready to use condition. It only takes a few minutes to touch this up and put it away. I could just grease it up and I will probably do that with the splined area to preserve it in storage.
