1992 Volvo 240 Vibration

Post by ScottSchneider »

Hi Folks,

I'm the original owner of a 1992 Volvo 240 with about 300K kilometres. Vehicle has had excellent maintenance history with minimal repair issues.

Today for the first time we are now predictably feeling/hearing low-frequency excess vibration under limited conditions:

1. When engine is turned on
2. When engine is turned off
3. When vehicle accelerates at low speeds

When cruising at any speed or accelerating at higher speeds (above 60km/hr) the problem diminishes almost entirely.

Your knowledgeable input and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. :)

Thanks very much,

Scott

I have only seen vibration in cars a few times. Twice it has been failing universal joints on the driveshaft. Look for evidence of rust or any play in joint. One time vibration was caused by exhaust pipe rubbing on rear tire.
