P2 XC70. Swapped S60R engine & M66. Flashed S/W. Now have "Immobilizer see manual" and can not fix it. Help?

Post by Tumbler510 »

Backstory: I bought a 2006 XC70 and a 2005 S60R. The driveline in the XC70 was working fine. I took the engine, trans (M66), and some other parts out of the S60R and put them into the XC70. I am in the final stages of the swap, getting the software for a manual trans and the new engine flashed onto the XC70 and the below adventure happens.

Mat Leavesley (who has been an absolute champion throughout this whole ordeal) remoted into my laptop and flashed software to get the car to be compatible with the S60R engine and the M66 transmission. I knew that this worked because previously I shorted the auto immobilizer to ground so the car would start, I left this connection grounded and after the flash was done, the reverse sensors were beeping thru the speaker. This is because that channel on the CEM changed from immobilizer to backup sensors.
I did not try to start the car at this time and assumed everything was working fine.

Mat told me to jumper the connectors on the bottom of the TCM (B1 to B13, and B2 to B14). I removed the TCM and ECM, then to get better access to the wires in question, I removed all of the connectors from the ECM/TCM base so the white part could be removed and I was working only with the wires and connectors. I jumped the wires as described and then reinstalled the connectors to the base, and installed the ECM onto it.

Now the car won’t start and I have a new message on the dash stating “IMMOBILIZER SEE MANUAL”. This is in addition to the other messages of “BRAKE FLUID LOW SERVICE URGENT” and “SRS-AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT”. These are for the BBK I swapped over but have not bled yet, and the climate control that I unplugged while the battery was connected.

Mat tried to VIDA into the car, but he said it was acting as if the CEM was not there at all. I checked and rechecked everything I did, but the car still would not start. Because the car was working fine before the flash, I doubt the antenna ring failed all of a sudden. I checked the fuses in the engine bay and they are all good. I swapped the wires I had spliced, but it did not help. I then removed and reconnected all of the connectors to the base and checked that they were all in the correct position and the wires were still intact.

So far I can find no issue with the work performed, but don’t know where to go from here in terms of troubleshooting. Mat suggests I bench test the CEM to make sure there is communication, which I will probably do tomorrow, but I didn’t interact with the CEM at all, so I don’t know why it would be bad all of a sudden.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. I am looking forward to getting this rig back on the trails and making more YouTube videos, and it sucks to see her sitting in the driveway under tarps everyday.

Worth mentioning. neither vdash or vida can talk to the car atall.
Its like the cem isn't there.
Having flashed hundreds of cems, I'm highly doubtful it was the cause, as the cem was still talking after the manual conversion.
I'm pretty sure we reconnected to the car after the config change to refresh the list of modules and show there was no longer a tcm in the list.

As I said to Chris if it were me, I'd get the cem on the bench and connect to it directly with vida (a process I'm familiar with, but most normal people quite rightly... are not lol) to rule out wiring mistakes.

I'd also put an oscilloscope on the cem can to check for signs of life.... Again not something most people are familiar with.

If we can establish signs of life with with vida on the bench or with a scope then it would confirm wiring issues in the car.

We can of course attempt a cem reload at some point..... But i don't think it's a software issue.

Sorry, I don't spend a ton of time on the forums. It looks like Yagger is someone who works at Total Auto Tech?

Is that correct?

I am leaning towards pulling the CEM and bench testing it, as Mat seems very in the know on the issues that could cause this.

Fixed the issue. I had the wires crossed somehow. Immobilizer message gone.

When do we expect the next video where you not only loose the wheel, but also crack the cylinder?
