On a break at a conference so throwing this out there.

I am making a fairly decent donation to my Mom's community college and, after visiting and meeting with students there, have another wild idea to try.

Niagara is an economically depressed area and most of the kids there are shoestringing it through college with jobs, classes, and family to boot. I would like to do a donation of a useable P80 or P2 car to a student in need, which i will buy from various sources and pay to fix up.

Is there anyone here on MVS that can be a liason for parts or even help if needed in Western NY? Robert isnt too far away so I can make that work I think, Ill reach out to him.

I will help with parts where I can from my PIF parts but shipping is the pain. It might be cheaper for me to buy and ship stuff from Rock Auto from their clearance parts and ship them. Often no-name brands, but for non-critical parts they may be just fine.

Great mission!
Not to change your plan, but what if a Volvo was a short term loaner when someone's daily driver is down for maintenance. Many would benefit from this arrangement.

I think it makes sense to make it a clean transfer of title for liability reasons. Worst case, someone keeps a $1000 car

For a second, I considered donating poor rusty Geronimo, but then I realized: Would it hurt someone to receive an old car which may require expensive, atypical maintenance? We can rehabilitate it before donation, but since it's old, maybe something odd would break and leave the recipient with a big bill or, worse, a car that locals don't have the expertise to fix.

I've been working toward fixing Geronimo for sale, but I don't want the buyer to get a lemon despite my best efforts.

Thanks Firefox. The whole county Is only 500 sq miles, so commuters are only about 10 miles per day. I think cars which even have 25k of life left in them can get someone through 2 years of college. I’m trying to establish a parts network and labor to keep them moving. An inspectable runner is arguably a 1500-2000 car, and the college will have a tax free number, or I’ll establish one for this.

The things that kill you are tires and the like, have to be good in upstate NY but these cars are good in snow at least

Between us we have lots of parts for Geromino! I’ll put him/ her as a possible.

A southern car would be good to avoid rust issues. Problem is getting to NY. Get a bus ride back south?

If its driveable with transfer tags, not a problem. I have so many SkyPesos I can fly most anywhere for free, and the beauty of these cars is a 1000 mile trip in a P80 seat is still heaven on the my FWG torso.
