What I was asking is, are all of the ignition switch
wires connected where they're supposed to be?

Yes everything is in a perfect shape. I even removed the electrical tape that was holding the wire bundle together to examine every single wire buy nothing looks bad.

Maybe you already did this and I missed it above.... have you measured the voltage levels at the connectors on the switch to verify that you're seeing the correct values as you turn the switch to each position?

Your answer still doesn't seem to address what BEJ was suggesting. He's not asking about condition of the wiring or connectors (although that's important!), or how well they are connecting, but rather about the order of the connectors as you go around the switch.

So whether or not the right colored wire is in the right place, to make sure none got switched onto the wrong contacts. You would check by comparing the order of the color labels in the diagram he posted, with the order of the wire colors on your switch.

I consider myself "electrically challenged" :) and I did not measure voltage levels at the connectors. Someone would have to explain this diagram to me, or better yet write step by step procedure (a YT video would be ideal.) The black plastic retainer with the wire bundle wasn't replaced so the wires are where they were before this job. I only replaced the part with pins (Volvo 9447803). Before this job car would always start with a single turn of the key.
BTW, how do you thank different authors for their comments and suggestions? I think I forgot.

I thought you would find interesting what was wrong with my car. First of all, it was nothing related to the ignition switch. During the initial check, the technician stated it sounded like low compression when the start attempt was made. He performed a compression check and found 60, and 80,80,100,100 psi. He also found the lifters collapsed. He "pumped up the lifter" and the engine started perfectly.
Can someone educate me on "pumping up lifters" and collapsing lifters? What was the cause?
He recommended replacing the starter (noisy) and the battery (I was planning to get a new one anyway). What starter would you recommend? The prices have a big range ($40-400).

My brother found a smoking deal on a Bosch remanufactured unit. Some will say they are not as good as they used to be, but unfortunately not much is these days. He has a 97 850 NA auto.

He found his deal surprisingly on Amazon in the US where he lives. Rock Auto is also a good source for stuff like this in the US. Their price is about $200 US of which is $50 core charge. They also have a SC Delco reman unit at about $160 and Denso at $180. All have core charges. You may want to consider shipping costs and check locally if you can get it at not much more, but then returning will likely be cheaper for your core charge. Amazon has one Bosch starter, it shows at $230 US but does not look like a core charge.

I am not sure what Rock Auto charges for shipping in the US. You may have to weigh up total cost including shipping and Core return shipping and core refund to see what is best.

Up here, battery wise, Volvo Canada has used Interstate batteries and I buy then from who ever gives the best price. Again, my brother got a good deal from Costco in the US.

Good Luck!

Neil.

I purchased A-Premiums starter for our 05 GS430. They are out of stock for the 850 so call to see when it will be available. Amazon carried their product but only has a 30 day return window vs 90 days if purchased direct. Also, warranty is 3 year vs Amazon 1 or 2 years I forget. Have bench tested and it seems to work fine. Hope to install it by months end.

The 2002 V70XC injectors were $51 for 5 and the car fired right up and is quieter than before and smoother. The only issue was one O-Ring with slightly larger on one side. Could have potentially worked as it was large but decided to use one of the old O-Ring which at 83K miles still looked new. Have also purchase air filters for other cars from them.
