Key locked inside the car, 2nd remote not unlocking Topic is solved

So the other day, my V70 was in the driveway with the engine running. My significant other locked the doors (perhaps it's because we live in NYC, we don't trust anyone). She used the second remote we have, but it would not unlock the doors. I used the physical key to unlock, but the lock cylinder would not turn. Eventually AAA came and they used a tool to pull up the door lock knob inside.

With the engine off, and me standing outside, I tested both remotes. They both work as expected.

Are Volvos designed to do this? disable other remotes when one remote/key is already in the ignition?

Full disclosure, my "Alarm needs service" light is on, I pulled the alarm fuse, sunroof works. The remote battery was low, but replaced when I was attempting to unlock.

BTW, I called Volvo and they don't have any idea if this was normal. They suggested towing to the stealership. But they'd tow it there for free due to their "Lifetime free tow" owner benefit. This was new to me, but I'd never have it towed to the dealer unless I'm looking for pain.

yes thats normal....almost.
i don't know how you managed to lock the car from outside with the engine running.
with engine running it should not respond to second fob.
the solution is don't do it.

btw, if your engine is running you can also call the fire dept, its a fire risk.

The vehicle detected New York City and found no gun in the cabin. For the passengers safety let itself locked with the engine running.

its in the owners manual, you cannot engage security system with a second key whilst the engine is running.

I had a fob that kept locking the doors when I was working on the car (engine off),
I had to leave the window down, turned out to be the fob battery was going south.
Installed a new battery and it never happened again.

Another simple thing to check:
With the key in the ignition (Pos 0) and door open, does your chime (ding-ding) activate?
If you cannot hear the chime, the CEM is not detecting a key in the ignition.
That signal is important as it prevents you from locking the doors with a key in the ignition.
This seems to be where your problem started.

OK, with key in ignition Pos 0, the chime comes on when the door is open.
I can close the door, and manually lock the door with the door knob. This is what I'd normally expect when driving away (while you're inside). I think my wife used the door knob, locked the door while it was open, then closed it.
