I am trying to help a young student owner of the above car. I have only ever worked on a P1 maybe 8 years ago and it was a 2.4i not a turbo so not familiar. I know more about older versions of Volvos and some on P2's.
The owner is complaining that when he bought the car it ran well, but now it feels like it is down on power/boost and whistled at over 3k rpm.
We got the car up on the hoist to look over the intercooler and pipes from the turbo to the engine and removed the short rubber hose into the intercooler as the joints looked oily. The end away from the intercooler connection mounts to a metal pipe from the turbo and it was double clamped so I am thinking there is a possible issue with tis hose coming off. It does feel spongy but after a check and clean could not find any issues with those pipes. Checked all joints and tightened but at the end of all this it is the same.
Any guidance would be appreciated. Could it be a bad turbo or cracks i n the plastics like the intercooler? I have just bought a smoker and hopefully this weekend we can try and smoke the induction system for leaks as well as possibly the smaller pipes like for the TCV.
I have given the car a quick once over and there are definitely some catch up maintenance needed. The engine has about 150k miles as best we know as it is out of an 08. Apparently the original motor failed. We don't have any more info than that. Don't know if the ancillaries are from the original engine. Alternator was replaced a couple of weeks ago.
I am wondering if the issue is possibly elsewhere. He mentioned as he was leaving the parking brake was sticking. Do these get the same issue as P2's can with corrosion on the pivot peg for the shoes? The P2's can break off wrecking the rear hub.
I hope to look at some of the issues the car needs addressed this weekend depending on weather as we are forecast for 10C and about 12" of snow over the next few days.
Thanks.
Neil.

Since it only whistles at 3K RPM it may not be but do give the PCV a check. They whistle when the diaphragm is damaged. Can replace the whole unit or just the diaphragm.

Wow, you learn something new every day. Never heard of this on a PCV. As always this is great info and I will now spend time looking at the videos as I really need to understand this.

Owner pulled the diaphragm today and says he can't see any problem with it. No tears, but he said he thinks he stretched it taking it out so will order a replacement anyway. So won't know if it had anything to do with the issue until it is replaced, but sounds unlikely.
I have ordered a small smoke machine which hopefully will be here Friday so we can try maybe on the weekend to start trying to smoke the car systems. Unfortunately the kit of pipe plugs is not getting here until next week so we will have to improvise!
We have a lot more things to check. First we have to confirm the engine in it. We believe it is a 2008 B5254T7 from an 08 C30. It's original engine was a B5254T3 which is basically the same but down 9bhp. Problem is he would like to Polestar tune it eventually, but we have to know the engine number and Volvo make it near impossible to see as the label is below the top engine mount! I'm sure there should be a stamped engine number somewhere else on the block, but will have to wait until this weekend to look it over more closely.
Then there is why the from rotors have about 10-12mm of untouched surface on the outside edges. I know the same caliper with different bracket is fitted to the 280 and 300mm rotor diameter options, but the 320mm rotor and caliper is different. As the rotor fits, I'm wondering if the rotor and bracket are correct but the wrong calipers are fitted, assuming the can physically fit?
So that is only part of the list, there is refitting the IPD undertray with missing hardware, they sticking rear parking brakes (I have to order a caliper/parking brake piston retractor).
Lots to do!

So replacement oil filter diaphragm has been ordered from FCP whom seem to be the only place that has them they claim.
On further investigating, the owner found a forum thread on Swedespeed talking of this issue. It in that case was due to a failing TCV. I did some checking on pricing and we found the best overall deal on a Pierburg TCV was from Rock Auto and should be here Friday as well as my smoke machine if deliveries are to be believed.
We will smoke the lines at the TCV and then fit it and see if it fixes the issue. I will also run Vida on it and see if anything shows. There are no engine lights on and the light does come on when ignition is first moved to position II. So the bulb has not been removed!!
The owner has also confirmed the engine is from the 08 C30 according to the last owner, who also confirmed it is still running the original ECU. I know the engines are similar, but without knowing the differences we won't know if that is an issue or not.
We will try to ID the engine type and confirm that and the engine number this weekend.
Depending on time we will see what else we can do. We need to find a muffler rubber mount as the one just forward of the muffler at the rear has snapped allowing the muffler to knock on the rear subframe. The mount forward of that is really rusted and will need some new support pins welded on. He has a buddy that is training as a topflight welder so a good friend to have!!

You can find the rubber muffler mounts on Amazon cheaply if my memory serves me right.

Thanks for that, but we only need the one, and it is only $15 CDN from Volvo. Those with shipping are $20 US to Canada. I'll look on Amazon though, that is a good suggestion!

Today we continued to chase parts for this weekend repair frenzy! Only issue we still have is finding a reasonable source for rear shock boots and it's retainer. Volvo shocks are ridiculous pricewise for my young student friend. The aim is to get the car working well and as best we can to Stage 0. Then as and when money is saved then tackle some of the parts where nicer shiny stuff can be added.
Shock options are very limited for the AWD P1's (were they sold in the US?). I think I found KYB and Volvo. They owner found and bought a pair of Munro (yikes...!) shocks. But as they are for maybe 1-2 years hopefully they will last that long! He already has set his sights on a tasty upgraded suspension kit (don't know what) that was about $1100 US.
Today we have hopefully snagged a pair of front ABS sensors. One got broken when he and his buddies were working on the car. Volvo wanted $200 + tax for a replacement. I think we got 2 ATE parts for $62 CDN on clearance locally!!
Today I ordered a wind back kit for the rear brake pistons from Amazon (used Matt's code for him!) for $32 CDN. The smoker is supposed to arrive from Amazon tomorrow as well as the new TCV from Rock Auto.
Now we will just have to see what the weekend weather brings! We have had about 8-10" of snow and the forecast is for possibly that or more again by the time it stops on Sunday. Thankfully we have a heated garage!

Well the solution was the TCV. What a nightmare it is to replace. On a P2 or a P80 it is a 5 minute job. Even on a FWD P1 I could see it being challenging, but easier to do. Having an angle gear in the way meant two people using one hand each. One from below the car and the other with the front RH wheel removed, working over the front control arm and RHF axle. Even then it was a swine to do.
Again someone at Ford/Volvo/Mazda thought it was a good idea to hook the TCV on a small metal tab on the end of the turbo at the bottom RH of the engine. It took about an hour to fight the hoses off using long 90 degree pliers to get the spring clips off the 3 hoses and persuade the welded in place rubber hoses to release hold. Even the electrical clip is on the opposite side to the access. You mostly work by braille and one eye if you are lucky. Flash light or arm are your choices. One not the other!!
Car is now back boosting which is a great step forward on resurrecting this car to good useable condition.
