where do you keep your phone in your 850?

Post by Clemens »

Seriously, after 13 years of driving 850ies I still have no Idea where to put my phone while driving. I usually put it under the parking brake, but this isn't good for spirited driving. Under the armrest I have my wallet. And the tiny compartment on the driver's door is full with who knows what.
That bottle holder holder by VPrints got me thinking there might be a better solution than constantly fishing for my phone under the seats.

I mounted a phone holder to the passenger vent in the dash over the heater controls. But, I use the GPS and mapping in the phone so that is visible, reachable and a power cord down the the cigarette lighter is not an issue. Of course, the power cable also shares an adapter with the cable for my dash camera.

This LISEN has worked the best. After trying a variety of suction cup on windshield or stick on dash types with flex arms and various vent mounts, this has been the best overall. The magnet is very strong and the plate that attaches to the back of the phone is thin. The curved clip end around the vent holds the mount super tight. You'll need to pre-adjust the vent before tightening as you will lose adjustability on some cars. The up and down for sure is lost but on some cars the left and right adjustment is still okay. I use the rectangular backing plate rather than the round.

Some times I open the ash tray (which has never been used as an ash tray) and set my phone in landscape. It rests quite comfortably there and you can still get a glimpse of Google maps.

I keep mine in my pocket. If anyone calls me while I'm driving they can leave a voice mail and I'll call them back when I've stopped.

Either in my pocket, or for GPS usage I have repurposed an old strong GPS suction mount with a modern ugreen holder. Vent mount seems impractical to me, I think glass suction mount it the way to go.

Too bulky in front or back pocket. Gotten use to a credit card size wallet for the few cards in the front pocket and don't like sitting on anything in the back pockets.

Have found the suction cup intrusive and not stable besides cup hardening and loosing suction. Have parts  from quite a few type of holders including vent units.

Saw this yesterday and seems to be more flexible and doesn't block the vent as much.

Whatever works best. The vents in my 850 at least are way to unstable to support a phone. Suction can work, I use an old navigon holder because they don't make them like they used to... as with cars.

Yes, instability and broken vents can be a problem with vent holders. This particular brand when tightening, the large backing will span 3 vents pulling the center one against the top and bottom so it's pretty stable. There are no perfect solutions for sure and everyone has their ideal placement so suction cups on dash or windshield mounts are the only other choices.
