Just going a completely different direction.
Am I right that you still have a key and a fob?
And is that key chipped? In your part of the
world, I don't know which system you have.
In some countries, a '98 is a US MY '99.

If you considering chip in the key for immo. USA export models got chipped keys (and immo) very late with 99 years models.
EU models had chipped keys ever since 95-96 models.

I just installed remote start with keyless entry into my 98 V70, I have no original Volvo fobs, no chipped key. On the driver's side door key tumbler are 2 wires, this sends the lock/unlock/disarm signal to the immobilizer module. How the lock works is if you turn the key in the driver's door once, only the driver's door opens, if you turn it again, all of the doors open. When you use the key to lock, all of the doors lock.

You need to tap into these wires, they are seperate from the lock and unlock switch on the door. To unlock, you need a double pulse signal, I think the first pulse disarms the alarm, the second unlocks. If you send a signal down the lock wire, it locks and arms the alarm after a timer countdown.

For me to remote start my car, I have to unlock with my fob, then lock my car, then remote start. Otherwise the alarm goes off. I want to try to get it to send a signal down my unlock wire before starting to turn off alarm automatically.

There is a bypass, usually aftermarket, that the remote start guys have to install for both automatic and manual trans, even with the shipless units.
