Start prevented, try again after getting airbag replaced.

Post by 02V70 »

I recently got the drivers side airbag replaced, and I had no issues driving home. The next day, when starting there was no cranking and I got the message “start prevented, try again.” It might have said failed instead of prevented, I don’t remember. After trying a few times, and closing all the doors, the car started. I stoped and started several times that same day with no issues. Is this just a one time thing? Is something failing? Could the dealer have damaged something when they replaced the airbag?

There was a recall. I’m not sure when it was but I think I replaced it a few years late. Can I use a standard code scanner to get the codes even thought there is no cel?

This happened again today when I tried to start the car, however it didn't go away until after 20 mins of trying to start. I tried unplugging the battery multiple times, locking an unlocking the car 5 times, and attempting to start a bunch. I also had a spare key which did not start the car either. I scanned the codes and nothing showed. Battery voltage was fine at 12.4v. After all this and trying to start many times, I finally got it to start. After turning the car off, it started fine again. Do I need VIDA/DICE to troubleshoot this? Is there a part that needs to be replaced?

When taking the cover off for the steering column, this piece was in the bottom plastic cover. What is it? Is it not being in its place the cause of my problem?

part of the ignition lock ? looks like a plunge pin.
Maybe part of the start prevent mechanism that connects to the gear shift lever in the center console.
or steering lock pin ?

This problem has not happened in the last few days, but I will order a used key ring antenna to hopefully solve the problem. Could this be some kind of grounding issue?

Volvo compatible scanner?

Given the proximity to the airbag recall I’d ask the dealer if they would do the diagnostics for you for free. They should own any issues happening as a result of the recall. Especially when you are finding loose parts.

I'll probably give them a call. I would rather fix it myself though since the dealer is an hour away and I would have to skip class.

I replaced the key ring antenna with a used eBay one and it seemed to work. With the unit unplugged, I got the same Start Prevented Try Again Message. Hopefully this solves the problem. I am not 100% sure since I only get this error message about once a week for the past two weeks.
