Replacement engine options - 00 S70 NA

Post by scot850 »

A local Volvo friend's sons car has somehow managed to destroy a piston. At present I don't know if the head is any good. It was rebuilt about 8 months ago, so hopefully it can be salvaged.

Question is, what engines or blocks can be transplanted into this car easily? We have only 2 x 850 NA's in the local yards, but they will both be 2.5 motors? Also they don't have inlet VVT capability. Can the blocks be used with the original head or is the bore different?

There are Zero VVT or any V/S/C 70's in the yards. The other options would possibly be P2 V70/S60 NA motors from early P2's possibly. Are any of those compatible either in block or full engine?

Owner has a 2.4T motor available but is the block usable on an NA head or a compression rations off?

Thanks,

Neil.

I’ve got a 2000 head pulled in Albany. Pistons I can probably get too. Need month of April though

We are trying to find a quick fix as it is the son's daily driver for work. I'll let you know if we can make use of that. Appreciated!

I thought there would be some info on this request. I have found an 04 S60 NA with a B5244S NA motor which is the same 2.4 l motor as the 00 S70 NA. Can this be swapped in? The 00 S70 also has a B5244S motor.

I wince a little when I read " quick fix " related to a blown engine. If that is really an issue, then buy another running car. That's your quick fix.
As I have often found, hurry up is the mother of f**k up.

The son needs the car for work. Can't afford another. They may have a way around the urgency. They will know by the end of the week.

They have a C70 that has been repaired after a very minor fender bender. The bought it to repair from salvage. It won't pass inspection until it gets a windshield that they have been waiting for for 8 months! It has final turned up and will be installed Thursday. If that goes well then the car just needs to be seen with the new windshield to pass inspection and then the son can use that for now. It has already been inspected for the other physical damage which was a dent on the rear LH fender arch and a rear bumper cover.

I have found a B5244S motor in a 04 S60NA at the junkyard. They charge about $300 US but you have to pull it as it is a PnP.

If the C70 works out, then they have more time and options and we may be able to take Abscate up on his offer. The engine is being dismantled to see if the head made it. Still not sure what caused the failure. Had the head rebuilt last year, new water pump and timing kit, valve seals and gaskets. I guess we will know more once it is stripped. I know the spark plug tip was damaged.
