Got underneath it tonight. Noticed that the passenger side inner axle boot is badly torn, grease everywhere. Also appears that the passenger side ball joint is a little worn...I can wiggle the wheel just a slight bit whereas the drivers side wheel is completely tight.

Glad there is progress and it's something obvious thus far.

I'm fortunate to have a good, specialty Volvo shop (not dealer) in the area. Will take it there next week now that I generally see what might be going on. Probably not good to drive it with a failed boot much longer.

If it's an OE Volvo, very little debris / grit and still has grease, you might consider cleaning and rebooting as aftermarket CV for Volvo's are hit and miss. Have your mechanic weight the two as he has to go back in if he can't source a good CV axle.

Having the passenger side axle and ball joint replaced. $1100 out the door. We'll see if that fixes it.

My first guesses (since that's what we're all doing :)) would be sway bar end link and control arm bushing to subframe.

Did they replace the spring seats too? If so, fair chance they used low quality parts, which could have failed. "A couple years" is typical lifespan for those. Put a 21 mm wrench (or large locking pliers) on the top nut, can you turn the nut (not good) or does the rubber spring seat prevent it from moving (good)? Check both sides.

Drive axle was apparently quite worn at 233k miles. Got that replaced and one ball joint that had some minor damage. Seems good now.

Glad it was something easy though a little costly.

I can confirm that the repair is complete. Pop sound is gone and ride is smooth again.
