Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?
Fitted the new wheels on the S70 and the results are looking mighty fine

Well not today, but last Friday and Saturday to be specific! With the majority of work done my buddy who is a former Volvo mechanic, with my 'supervision'
, the rear main crank seal (RMS) was replaced on my friends 98 V70 that I generally help out on maintenance on. As I get older, having some of the heavier lifting done by younger folk with skills has its' attractions!
We used my garage with a combo of his Pro-tools and some of mine. I supplied the hoist, oil drain, engine hanger, trans lift and vehicle steady post as well as shop supplies.
We started Friday around 6pm, and by 9pm the car was ready for the trans to be dropped. We decided that was a good point to stop as my buddy had already put in a long day at his regular job.
Saturday saw the trans out in about an hour, and then the front seal and a leaking axle seal on the RHS was swapped, along with the rear main which was slightly more than 'sweating'!
Then as they say, re-installing was the reverse, except as usual with any old car we found a few extra 'challenges'. The RH inner tie rod boot was literally falling off the car. But then we realised the inner tie rod was rather limp as well. Fortunately I have new aftermarket parts in the new parts sash for my own car we could use, so in went a new TRW inner tie rod and Lemforder boot. The other side will need done at some point but has been get added to the other items we identified as on the coming due list! Only so many funds are available by the owner and my PIF funds.
My buddy was impressed with the simplicity of the inner tie rod tool I bought from I think it was IPD. Looks like a HD muffler U-clamp with teeth on the inner face and then a hole for a 1/2" breaker bar. Work easily on removing the inner tie rod! It will definitely come in handy on the other side!
Also found a coolant leak. This was disappointing as it was in a repair shop recently to get the radiator replaced (I think contact with a low concrete sidewalk may have happened as the front fog light a askew again!). Initially we thought it was the water pump but records showed the water pump and timing belt were only done 4 years ago and about 30k miles. Removing the timing belt showed a bone dry water pump. Further investigation found a leaking thermostat housing gasket. Again a new one was found in the stash and installed, fluid was added and then the car was good to go. Ruby is fit for service again!
Saturday took about 5-6 hours onto about 2.5 hours on Friday. So my estimate was it took about 7.5-8 hours in against a book time of 11 hours from Volvo. Shows what a difference it makes with experience and the right tools! That time also included the other two jobs.
Next on the list is once again straightening the front bumper and fog light mounts, finding a missing fog light grill, finding a good used or new trans oil cooler inlet hose (again it is sweating at the lower connector swage), and then the LH inner tie rod and boot.
In the future, outer axle boots may be needed as well as finally getting the Evap pipe work smoked to find the pesky leak!
Please note! No leftover bolts or nuts or other parts were found at the end of the job!

because sometimes you have to get dirty, i decided to do the serpentine belt ans tensioner on my 94 T5, niticed that the timing belt was oily, found out that my front cam seals seem to be wet (and hope they are the source for the oil running down the front of the motor). Had to order stuff. And while waiting i finally started pulling the oil cooler lines on my 96R. Now I have two non-funct Volvo Turbo wagons. I am waiting for RTV to arrive so I can hopefully put the R back together without too much fuss.

What is the RTV for? If I may ask out of curiosity.

It's for keeping the black rectangular O ring between motor and oil thermostst in place during installation. otherwise it supposedly falls off too easily.
