2007 XC70 heater core replaced, which component broke..?

Post by AylmerQc »

I'm buying a 2007 XC70. The previous owner says when he had the heater core replaced, the mechanic broke a component that allows the flipping of the flap door from summer to winter temp control, or something of the sorts.
I spoke to the mechanic and he said the owner, who doesn't do any work on the car himself, wasn't too fussy about replacing the broken part and all that needs to be done is reach underneath and flip a vent or control. Supposedly the part can be hard to find and is easily broken when changing a core and a good alternative is to fix it by installing a choke-type cable up to the dashboard to accomplish the summer/winter flip.
I'm aiming to have a go at this myself but wondering if this is as common a problem as the mechanic makes it out to be and which part it would be, so that I can look into ordering or finding one...
Thanks in advance...

Never heard of this. There is no summer to winter change over that I am aware of in the heating system, it is all controlled by the ECC system and again there is no winter setting. Some early cars had a winter setting for the trans but not AC system.

The part the mechanic is referring to is a plastic “linkage” type of actuator that controls the blend doors when you change heater temp or switch from heater to A/C, etc. It’s the one on the drivers side that’s easily broken when the heater core is removed/replaced without first parking the heater controls in the right position before removing the core. I know because I’ve broken it myself when I performed my first core replacement. The last I knew the part is still available from Volvo.

Although that’s a rather vague illustration, I believe that’s the correct part number.
Even Amazon sells it!

OK, thanks.
When you asy parking the heater controls in the right position, do you mean in the right hand side position or else, which specific position would that be?

I would first check what's broken. Perhaps need an inspection camera to look it up closer. Could be as simple as link's joint disengaged.

I went through the same thing, breaking the linkage.

I wrote the detail in this thread...

Well, I think all the information I need is right there.
Procedures to follow and avoid. Part numbers, videos...
Thanks.
Much appreciated...
