oil consumption

Post by azureblue »

2014 s60 T5, about 2 1/2 quarts for 6K miles, using Wal Mart Supertech high mileage 5w / 30 all synthetic.. 101K miles..
Is this normal? Is it the oil itself?

It's not normal.

#3 High Oil Consumption 2014 S60
Volvo knew this defect since 2017...
https://www.carcomplaints.com/Volvo/S60/2014/

Started using Rotella T6 15W40 in the 2002 V70 XC with 83K miles about 2 weeks ago. Found the engine to run stronger and mileage is pretty good as the car glides with little throttle input once up to around 40mph.

Had used the Kirkland 15W40 in the 00 S70 SE to quiet the air cavitation ticking in the pan due to the oil O-Ring problem in the pan. It worked better better than the Rotella T6 15W40 in current use though the car is smoother with the Rotella T6 synthetic.
.
Your car could be having issues with the oil piston ring, see videos in the link below. I would go with the Rotella 5W40. Since NC summers are hot and the current ambient is suitable, you may consider the Rotella T6 15W40. See how the car starts up and check consumption every 1K miles. If the car is running fine and consumption reduced you should be fine.

At this time you should change the oil twice a year and no more the 5K miles. The Rotella will do more cleaning than the Walmart oil so first change could be at 3K miles or 3 months. If it's an oil ring problem the caveat is whether the rings have caused cylinder wear. Regardless, it's too much oil for 6K miles.
.
Walmart, Kirkland & Amazon oils were made by Warren Distribution and considered a good oil. However. don't see it on the back label of the Supertech anymore.

I guess "hot" is relative - I moved here from New Orleans :-). It got up to 92 F last year, where I live.. So Rotella T6 full synthetic 15/40?

Below is generic chart assocated with an article on oil. Each Manufacturers has a slight variation due to their recommended oils but it's a good gauge on hot. Also, saw this article on Walmart oil today.

so are you saying that, if I switch to Rotella T6 15W40, I will have less oil consumption?
At 101K, should I call the dealer about the defect repairs - re- ringing?
Thanks

Definitely check to see if your car qualifies for the oil control ring repair. Rotella T6 will clean better and should help with oil consumption. How much depends on the severity of the problem.
