It’s OK I was not trying to sound rude whatsoever and I hope you didn’t take me for being rude. I’m just so confused and it’s nothing against the man that’s here trying to help me. He is extremely honest and trying so hard to help me. It’s just like I’ve tried to explain in my original post when I was leaving the doctors office three weeks ago this Wednesday I go to go into my car start the car and the whole inside of the car smell like antifreeze and it never showed that it was overheating Reservoir was empty and I took it to a mechanic place and they said I need a new radiator, but luckily I didn’t have them do it so this man here was kind enough to check everything out even though he really ordered the radiator for me and and hoses and all of that and have him check the other day That it’s not my radiator that is not leaking at all to try to see what you guys saw it. We are a dilemma here you know he bought the parts for my car of course he bought hoses radiator all of that but the radiator when he put the fluid in the water and the reservoir whatever it’s not leaking out so of course we’re assuming that it’s not the radiator but now when I turn the car on , the fan does not come on. It only comes on when I turn on the air conditioning so now we’re assuming that it’s the fan or the thermostat but I do appreciate any help here and I promise you I was not being rude and I probably sounds like I was, but I’m not. I’m just so frustrated by this whole thing.

Here is a "Repair" Geek helping others to see if the coolant leak is from a head gasket. The other is for a DIY tester in case your helpful mechanic doesn't have one. As the first video from Eric The Car Guy indicated, your mechanic can go and borrow one from the auto supply store and if he watches the video perhaps he can learn and experiment with your car. If this doesn't help your mechanic at least I hope it will help others here.

BTW: It's trolling fishing on a troller and you have to have a troller which makes the fish think it's not a troller. Since they are in school all the time I doubt it. Hope all this helps.

I read somewhere here on the Volvo form about the fan not working and that could cause overheating and all of this stuff so he still can’t find out what caused my car to have the issues that it did almost 3 weeks ago and the repair shop in Springfield said it needed a new radiator but again the other day and today he filled up the reservoir And nothing leaked out of the radiator so I don’t understand it. Something just isn’t making sense anyhow but I was reading to him about the fan and he said that the only time that my fan went on in my car is when I have on the air conditioner when I have the car on, but when I don’t have the AC on the fan is not coming on, and I thought that I read someplace here on the Volvo forum,

Volvo fan does not come on unless you have the AC on but this man is telling me that it should come on even without the AC on and buy it not coming on that’s probably why my car overheated and they thought the radiator was broken, so I’m just trying to find out here Here have that problem? Where does your fan come on all the time even if you don’t have your AC on? I feel so bad for this man because he truly is being honest and trying to help me so much. I think he’s getting frustrated because he doesn’t know about Volvo, but I think he’s starting to find out lol and Volvo is the only car I’ve ever had. I’ve never had any other brand of cars unless it was a loaner car or driving a car back home or something .

So getting back to the fan, the fan in the Volvo only should be on running when the car has the AC on?

So when the AC is not turned on then the fan does not have to come on?

I thought that the fan would have to come on because my fan is on the AC so that’s making him think that it is the thermostat and he has one ordered and he’s going to put it in tomorrow morning.

fan comes on if the engine is running too hot, over 220F
...or if the AC is on.

to find out the coolant temperature just order an elm 327 from amazon, plug it in the obd port under the dash , connect to your android phone via wifi and download the free torque software.
this will also read and erase trouble codes plus a lot more for less than $15.
i leave mine plugged in , it will not affect the car battery.
if your smartphone is apple then get the apple version.
see youtube videos for information.

Thank you so much for that info. Well, my new mechanic guy is supposed to be here this morning with the new thermostat. I’m hoping that that’s The issue.

I know yesterday the car was running and the fan was not coming on, but the AC was not on and he said that the fan should’ve come on even without the AC on, but he didn’t say what temperature or how long but I think my car was registering you know so maybe that’s what made him think that it’s the thermostat but I guess it could be the fan could be broken also then right?

I should’ve asked him to check the fan. I’m so appreciative of all the help that this man is giving me it’s unbelievable and now he’s not Volvo mechanic he’s actually learning about Volvo from my car lol his prices are very reasonable and of course the parts are not Volvo parts And everything in my car is Volvo parts until now disappointed in that but that’s not because of him. It’s because of my money situation but he’s very very honest person and that’s sometimes hard to find nowadays.

He worked so hard to find out what’s wrong with my car I’m just thinking that it could be the fan, but if it was the fan that it wouldn’t go on when the AC was on right? Also I was told that Volvo requires a certain brand or kind of antifreeze. Do you know what that would be? And thank you so much for all your help.

If you have to add more antifreeze, then either
(a) put in the same kind as is already in there.
or
(b) completely drain the antifreeze, rinse the system with water, refill with the correct coolant.

Zero G-05 antifreeze matches the Volvo brand, this would be correct and is easy to find, you want it to be 50% antifreeze and 50% distilled water:

We’re trying to figure out the fan in my car. Does anybody know when it should come on if you don’t have the air conditioning on my car has been running now about five or 10 minutes and the fan still has not come on.

Oh, OK. I couldn’t find anything where you mentioned about when the fan should go on I guess I’ll have to look back here and see if I can find whatever that you said.
