Volvo Repair Database DIY: 2004 V70 Fuel Door Spring Fix, FREE Mod

Post by cn90 »

- The black plastic tabs that hold the spring break frequently. The part is not expensive, about $15 at Volvo dealer.
Replacing it is simple (search youtube for tricks). For me, $15 is not an issue...the issue is why replacing it when it can break again?

- Magnet is a great solution.

- In some posts, some people drill through body metal, I don't like it b/c of risk of rusting later (may or may not be important).

- My solution is very simple:
* Go to your local roofing/gutter company and ask for 2 sheet metal screws, these screws are galvanized and should not rust (or you can paint them with black paint when you are done).
* Drill 2 pilot holes toward the front of the car as shown, this way the screws do not pierce the body work.
* These screws work perfectly b/c once they are about 3-4mm into the plastic, they hold the spring against the plastic frame.
* Note the orientation of the spring: the "short ends" go inward.
* I added a bit of grease where there is movement.

- That is it folks, it is a FREE fix! It works perfectly...and I think it looks fine from a cosmetic standpoint...

Long-term report four (4) years later, the 2 screws still work fine. Zero issues.

Do you check them periodically or are you not worried about having a screw loose?

So...the 2007 S60 had a brand-new Genuine Volvo Door Mount installed in 2023...

Exactly 1 yr later, the 2 tabs broke!
Bad engineering...

So the 2 new screws fix it.

Thanks. Great idea.
I just worked on mine a couple of days ago and used a hard putty to hold the spring in place but I'm not that happy with it because the door doesn't really open when I push the release button.
I'll go for your method I think. It looks better than the putty for one thing....

After the second bracket broke again this is what I did to solve the problem.
Got the strong pull magnet from HFT and installed it. Since 2018 still worked til now.
Hope this helps…

Interesting thread. The spring clips on my 2004 V70 broke about 13 years ago. I must be missing something because I don't think it's worth fixing. It locks OK and unlocks OK. I just pull it open when I get gas. It's been so long since it worked I'm not sure how it used to function. Would the door fly open all the way when you pushed the button on the dash? Maybe after everything else is done!
