It's worth a bit of money to do this right. I never trust why someone would sell not-quite-worn-out tires.

Regardless of AWD, a car like this likes the same diameter on all four tires. For handling, stability, etc. The brand / construction will also affect how it behaves in a "situation."

Age of tires is also to be considered. Worth also checking for previous repairs as it may have caused damage to the tire or sidewalls.

Used tires are a lottery as you don't know if they have hit pot holes, kerbs or the likes. Having said that, if I had a FWD car I would be less concerned about tire wear issues on front to back on the car.

Here tires are often for sale as we have seasonal tire swaps. People trade in their cars or sell them and they get left with the other set of tires. Cars also get written off and similarly the owner is left with the tires and sometimes rims.

There are a lot of really cheap Chinese tires out there these days and a few are supposedly not terrible. They are often sold for not much more than a lot of used tires.

For me, tires are important for your life.

Neil.

Many of these AWD cars are now FWD bc of stripped angle gear sleeve anyway.

If your car is now FWD, then keep driving it.

Otherwise, 4 new tire.
And sell the 2 good used tires.

this is one of my front tires before i realized the alignment was way off, only 1000 miles on this.
i'll run it until the next inspection, get a cheap chinese replacement and change it.
i probably drive less than 2k miles a yr.

Regarding used tires, sellers I have bought from on eBay have been bigger sellers. They note the 32 of an inch left and date code. Never had one with issues. Wife had a sidewall cut on her AWD SUV with 5500 miles on it. Found a tire with same tread depth to keep the other 3 through the life of the set.

If they won’t tell me the date code I won’t buy. And wouldn’t buy a set of four used either, in that case just get new.
