I think they are original CV Shafts, so ~190k mi. Passenger side was a cinch but Driver side is real stubborn.
Judging by the amount of rust from passenger side it shouldnn't be terrible on the driver side but who knows...
based on other threads around here I've tried:
Soaking with PB Blaster for several days, I think the o-ring in the seal prevents it getting in
Broke the tip off a prybar, luckily it didn't jam between the cup and the transmission case
Slide hammer adapter and CV fork were no good, just not enough room behind the cup
Cold chisel... nope
Wedging two demo screw drivers on opposites of the cup gets me as far as 1/4" and no more.
Tried all different orientations.
Just won't budge. Don't have air tools, just hand sledge and various hand tools.
any suggestions before I call a shop?
Keep trying and hope to get lucky? Leave the cup and swap the rest?
Thanks in advance
04 V70 2.5t driverside CV Shaft

will give this technique a try.
No joy so far, though seems more promising than everything else so far... two large flat screwdrivers 60 degrees apart, rigorous wiggling every 30 degrees rotation. I can see the shaft isn't completely seized, and there's some hope that all this jostling is working some pb blaster down into the splines.
I guess it's just a matter of hitting the right spot for the circlip to pop.

May I ask why you are changing them? And what brand of replacement you bought? If you are addressing a vibration while driving that you suspected was a CV axle, you likely already solved it by changing the passenger side, about 90% of the time they fail first. If you have the original CV Axles they might be fine. The original GKN Loebro axles go a REALLY long time!

yea the reason for replacement is vibration when accelerating through 50~60 mph. Sometimes faint vibration while cruising, depending on the engine load; nothing when coasting. Worse when car is warmed up. Transmission fluid and Oil analysis reports don't show excessive wear metals so I don't think they are the issue.
I've narrowed it down to the CV shafts as I've replaced pretty much everything else on the front end. Subframe bushings, tie rod ends, lower control arms. All were original afaik, so about time to replace. lower ball joints, swaybar links, and struts are still in good shape, they were replaced in '21.
I don't know for certain which side is the issue though my hunch is the driver side. Both sides have a little bit of lateral play but driver side seems to be slightly worse, and its axle bolt seem to work itself loose every so often. I'll hear a light click from front driver side when starting to move and coming to a stop, the click goes away for a bit when I retighten the axle bolt, comes back after few hundred miles.
The replacements were bought as a pair so if nothing else I'd like to get them both in at the same time. TRQ from 1AAuto. Not GKN but I don't expect I'll be driving this V70 for another 200k miles... but then again who knows.
No dice. gonna call it a day... been at this since morning. I can see the shaft is free, but the circlip just won't give. See if my luck changes tomorrow morning.

That acceleration vibration at 50-60 is almost certainly an axle joint, why not put it together and go for a drive since you've changed the likely culprit already?

Aye I reckon that's what I'll do. But in the morning lol. If my luck doesn't change after some more trying I'll button it up with a new axle bolt and see what happens. If the vibration is gone I guess can let it ride till I have to replace the driver side.

As i bolted the strut to the tower and trying to wrestle the lower strut into the knuckle i pulled the driveshaft inner joint out of the tranny output by accident. the whole knuckle with the control arm gives you a lot more mass ,grab the brake disk and yank it down.
the only bolts i removed were the 2 big ones securing the strut to the knuckle, the tie rod end nut and the abs sensor bolt in the knuckle.
the control arm was fully connected and the axle bolt in the wheel hub was still tight.
the only other way that =works every time= is a 4 lb hammer and chisel, really belt it HARD.

Had a few more tries and no luck. So put torqued everything back together and went for a drive on some back roads and the the interstate. The vibration seem to be gone, so I'll let it ride for the time being. Should the vibration come back I'll know exactly what the culprit is haha.
thanks folks! I'll bookmark these threads for when I have to deal with the cv shaft again.
