ETS and Check Engine Lights flash then stop while starting

Post by thrich »

2001 C70 with an original white label ETM, 80K miles. The car has been difficult to start in wet weather lately, usually OK in dry weather. Strange behavior now -- from a cold start -- key to on (run, but not to start), and tach pegs at 8K. Then key to off and back on, tach goes to zero, but ECS and Check Engine lights flash. They flash for about 30 seconds then quit flashing, sometimes go off, sometimes on steady, but in either case the car will start OK with a slightly longer than usual crank (two seconds). If I try to start while the lights are flashing, it cranks but won't start. After one start like this, the car will start right up with no odd indications. Car runs fine at all speeds once started.
Almost seems like the ECU and/or ETM are doing a self-test or establishing communication for that 30 seconds light flashing time. Newest software installed in ECU.
ETM is definitely shaky -- has a bad spot on TPS2 when doing the self test with VIDA and sometimes during start TPS2 will show 107 degrees on VIDA. Rarely it sets a steady ECS light with a 'Bad TPS2' DTC.
I guess I need to replace the ETM, but does anyone have any idea if that will fix all those symptoms? Anyone seen those symptoms before?

Hi I'm just trying to figure how to post anything, obviously new here but just recently picked up an 01 C70 with 101k mi I put 250 miles on it and now I have a really expensive paperweight outside my house :( no crank no start, one click; new battery and starter still one click in P or N, no click if in gear. Car supposedly had new timing chain less than 3k miles ago. Oil and coolant are fine, never heated up but acts seized after starting and driving about 400 feet... 🙏 please I need help

It isn't clear if your car is starting or not. But if it's an auto and starts and drives for 400m then loses Drive - problem with gearbox. Clogged oil filter = loss of pressure.
