Point of conversation, white blocks don't have rocker arms.
As suggested, running it at low rpm and lightly loaded may get the lifters to pump up again; a question to ask is where did the oil go, and why didn't the low oil pressure light announce itself ?

Does the engine pass the glove test? If not, did the oil get burned off during blow-by?

MoVolvos, no, I did not figure out where the oil went but I think that being an older engine it’s burning it and my friend I lent The car to receive the car right after I had done my last oil change and he probably just never checked the oil until it ran really low, About 4000 miles. I’m gonna try the seafoam and then a complete oil change possibly with thicker Dino oil And see how it sounds after that before, tearing into the engine and doing the oil pan With new seals and pick up line. I’m hoping the seafoam by itself will help restore the hydraulic lifters’ pressure.

Yes, a glove does not inflate!

What oil are you running in the engine? If you are running 5W-30, you could try a 5W-40 which is an option for my 00 V70R. Maybe worth trying a high mileage oil and see if that helps.

Careful with Seafoam, the secret ingredient is odorless kerosene. It will thin out whatever oil is in the engine. Clean oil and time may be the best hope.

If your friend has a lead foot the blowby will be very significant for an older engine already consuming oil. That's really a lot of oil going somewhere and the piston rings is a good assumption.

I really don't think that noise is the lifter as I haven't come across a thread with lifter issues. The seafoam most likely will be a problem for an oil pan seal if that is the problem. I would just try the thicker dino oil as a process of elimination. You can use the Walmart Supertech as Warren Industries produce oil for Amazon Basic and Costco Kirkland oils also which I used in the 00 S70 SE. If the noise changes you are headed in the right direction. Change the oil out early and consider it a cleaning oil if the noise is reduced and use Swepco 306 15W40 for the following change.

Had the Swepco 306 15W40 in the 98 S70 T5 for 1.5 years and Swepco 308 5W40 for half a year before donating the car. It will quiet the car further besides reducing blowby due to the formation of tribofilm produced by the ZNNP besides the proprietary DIMONYL. Used in quite a few makes and models while in CA and have gone 10 to 15K without much difference in the engine feel and performance. They have a program like Blackstone and if you use it the oil can have 100K intervals.

Swepco 306 Supreme Formula

The tribofilm does increase friction if used in excess per the article link below. The Swepco is so good however it will decreases blowby and increase the horse power due to the film reducing the piston ring gap (butt dyno). Being super slick your mileage will increase offsetting any friction from the tribofilm. For modern high tolerance engines using 0W20 the tribofilm won't help with the EPA when the engine is new but we all know how the newer piston design across all manufacturers have done to the engines.

https://link.springer.com/article/10.10 ... 22-01635-x

The problem occurred in newer 5 cylinders also. Many manufacturers which adopted this ring design for initial higher EPA rating suffered the same fate.

BKM,
Thanks for all the great information you provided. Of course the car is so old it’s not worth putting the money into changing rings, etc. so I will try the cheap stuff first but your suggestion on the kind of oil to run in. It is invaluable. Thanks again!!

Picked up 5 quarts of cheap Dino oil from Walmart. They didn’t have 5 or 10W in the 40 weight so I got 10W30. Hope it tells me something.
